The biggest problem in the world isn’t climate change, future pandemics, or democratic collapse.

It’s that far too many of our most brilliant minds are working on *everything but* those problems. 🧵

There is only one way to read, which is to browse in libraries and bookshops, picking up books that attract you, reading only those, dropping them when they bore you, skipping the parts that drag and never, never reading anything because you feel you ought,or because it is part of a trend or a movement

another small addition, but here is a little service that will give you both the text from an image and generate a perceptual hash (using Facebook's PDQ algorithm) of a given image.

more to come, will also be adding the storage of flagged images and the matching of flagged images w/ osprey
Add image OCR and perceptual hashing (PDQ) service by haileyok · Pull Request #8 · bluesky-social/osprey-atproto
Adds the Retina server, a small service that accepts the bytes for an image and returns either the text content of the image, or a perceptual hash of the image.

We have highlighted the critical role of ‘amateur’ volunteer weather observers whose dedicated observations made over decades for altruistic reasons are so invaluable to us now. There are still many volunteer observers taking daily climate observations today. Thank you to every one of these people.

I like this view and light in the evening. This church and buildings around it are well known by French but a little bit hidden from tourists. Val de Grace was built by order of Queen Anne of Austria in gratitude for the birth of her son, the future Louis XIV. #paris #history #JEP2025

Notre ville change ! Nos rues sont peu à peu rendues aux habitants, de nouveaux arbres sont plantés et les promenades facilitées et sécurisées.

C'est le cas de la rue Chaptal dans le 9e ou celle du Docteur-Lecène dans le 13e !

August 31st marks 28 years since Princess Diana’s passing. I arrived in Paris day before. These photos were taken 8 years ago at Pont de l’Alma, where I was struck by the way strangers held one another in shared grief. Diana would have been a wonderful grandmother. #princessDiana #paris
