• 3,000 group-location observations – more than twice the size of the current EA, and three times the size of Murdock’s original.
• Lat/Long coordinates for spatial mapping
• Data on population size in 1960 for most groups, helpful for aggregation and spatial interpolation.

🚀 New dataset & working paper out!

I’m thrilled to share “The Extended Ethnographic Atlas” --> an open, massively expanded version of Murdock’s classic Ethnographic Atlas (EA).

What’s new?
I said it would get worse very quickly. By tomorrow we will have completed the most dangerous & frightening 24 hours thus far of Trump 2.0. Just to name a few:
1. Defiance of a court order by sending migrants to Sudan without due process (despite clear DP decision SCOTUS) & Dist. CT. order.

Our article on Swiss municipality-level vote results has just been published in the @spsr.bsky.social!

We compiled results from 1866 to 1944 by visiting numerous archives and filled some gaps of the dataset for the period 1944-2025 from the Swiss Federal Statistical Office.

Reflecting the current authoritarian Zeitgeist, Nations in Transit research project by @freedomhouse.bsky.social, evaluating the state of democracy in former post-communist countries, has been discontinued after twenty years due to a lack of funding. This is what civilizational decline looks like.
Some personal news: the Department of Homeland Security has given me, an immigration lawyer born in Newton, Massachusetts, seven days to leave the U.S. Does anyone know if you can get Italian citizenship through great-grandparents?

I don't think this outmigration has been "political" neutral because it followed specific demographic patterns like education, age, or gender. Is there no research on that?

I'm reading a lot of hot takes about the German election. I agree that a lot of today's voting behavior in East Germany has to do with its historical legacy. But I'm surprised that no one has connected the dots between the huge flows of outmigration over the last 30 years and the electoral results.

New working paper: I show that LLMs can generate valid ideology scores for Heads of Governments across the world and over time. The measures display high correlations with existing indicators (e.g. V-DEM) and replicate established hypotheses (taxation, welfare state development, electoral systems).
