My PhD on bone marrow inflammation in #myeloma has finally come to an end! Thesis written and distributed and I will be defending a week from now!

Very ready to go ahead full throttle on a new chapter in my career
Terrific work from @jelenalab.bsky.social and Fabian Fischer on controlling cell death. Fantastic to see this out!
The loss of TBK1, or both TBK1 and the related kinase IKKε, results in uncontrolled cell death–driven inflammation. We show that TBK1/IKKε prevent premature cell death by limiting the activity of multiple death pathways in myeloid cells. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Super proud of my friend Sabrin @sabtahri.bsky.social, whose final (and terrific) PhD work came out today in #Blood (in collab with group of Niels vd Donk)

It demonstrates an association between BM CD16+ NK cells and response to dara!

Reese Witherspoon became a billionaire and people are cheering and congratulating her on being a hugely talented business woman.

I feel people do not realise that money is a limited thing. Billionaires (skilled or not, it doesn’t matter) are hoarding the resource.

What I find so brilliant about the haematopoiesis is that it takes place in a piece of tissue (bone) that already fulfils another role (holding up the meat sack).

Human design being space-efficient, ain’t it something

Just learned that US school libraries have banned Anne Frank’s diary, for the reason being she briefly discusses crushing on a girl.

Anne Frank’s diary! Banned!

Hematologists! I need help!

What is the unmarked population? Lin-cKit+Sca1-CD16/32+CD34- in mouse bone marrow!

Getting a bit tired of the inflation of importance of the physician-scientist. And I say that as someone who went to med school once upon a time.

Acting like they’re the most important being in research sells basic biologists, far stronger in bench lab skills, way short.

Absolutely fantastic work by Vivian Lau and @gerardlab.bsky.social on IFNy-related tumour escape! Must-read for all tumour immunologists! 💯

#EveryCellIsAnImmuneCell!💥Thrilled for the final version of our paper @cp-cell.bsky.social! We show that type III #interferons control ZBP1 activation driving gasdermin C cleavage & delaying gut repair by inducing #pyroptosis in intestinal epithelial cells! 1/n www.cell.com/cell/abstrac...
Type III interferons induce pyroptosis in gut epithelial cells and impair mucosal repair
Intestinal damage following colitis or irradiation induces type III interferons (IFNs), which delay the healing of the intestinal epithelium. IFN-λ directs the sensing of Z-form nucleic acids generated during gut injury and repair, triggering cell death and altering healthy epithelial regeneration.

Although still in 'First Edition' style, I am happy to finally share our latest article on DNMT3A double mutant AML. Hope to be able to share the way-easier-to-read print version of the paper soon! (1/2) #hemesky ashpublications.org/bloodadvance...
Double mutant DNMT3A AML: a unique subtype experiencing increased DNA damage and poor prognosis
Key Points. 1. Wildtype DNMT3A enhances TDG-mediated repair, whereas mutant DNMT3A impairs this process.2. Double mutant DNMT3A AML exhibits increased DNA

Now in press, excellent paper by @zkellermayer.bsky.social where he shows that in the myeloma 5TGM1 model activation of NK cells, ILC1 and CD8+ T cells is lost upon disease progression! 👀

Awesome work, happy to have contributed #mmsm

Officially dr. de Jong 🥂

Last Friday I finally defended my thesis and obtained my PhD degree cum laude. A big thank you to my supervisor Tom Cupedo, my paranymphs Cathelijne Fokkema, Sabrin Tahri and Natalie Papazian, and the opposition committee 🙌🏻

Still trying to build a stromal biology starter pack! #stroma #fibroblast

Let me know if you or other stromal biologists have joined bsky so I can add you!
I’ve made a starter back for #stromalcell #fibroblast enthusiasts! 🧫

It’s still very small as it seems many of our community haven’t made the move here yet and/or I can’t find them! Please reach out if you want to be added 🙌🏻

Maybe my parents would finally understand what I do
Hear me out - a show about a science department following PIs, postdocs and grad students👩‍🎓👨‍🎓. I think it would be at least as entertaining as all these medical shows (i know there would be a lot of comedy material 😅). (TBBT does not count; the Chair was awesome but sci academia has more shenanigans!)
