Any of y'all conversant with French poetry want to help me out? I need to find the original French version of a Leopold Sedar Senghor poem

I was told it was in his Chants d'Ombre but the copy I just received has no sign of it

It is generally translated as "I Will Pronounce Your Name" --

If there's a point to this thread, it's this: cherish the ridiculous, expansive dreamers in your life. They illuminate the world. Warm yourself in the glow they cast and never discount the value of imagining something stupidly impossible together. The alternative - not having them - is worse.

Heron man, heron man
Catches things like a heron can
See his neck? Very long
Eating fish makes him strong
Next time you see someone fishing by the river without a rod, take a closer look. It might just be Sōsuke the Heron Man!

If you have a LARGE follower count, pls know that Scott Horton is a chronic thief of posts. He also gets things very wrong and won't take posts down. No matter how nicely you ask.

Please unfollow him and do not repost.

Although he steals everything, Horton was recently verified by Bluesky.
Check the words. Check the time stamps.

Fucking clown shit.

Alright, where are my gifted kids at? You were smart and you never had to study and then you went to college and suddenly had to learn a new skillset overnight, that everybody else had years to learn, or flame out spectacularly?

That’s what talent is like.
In my experience, talent is a *detriment* to learning.

I didn't have to practice early on so I *didn't know how*. I didn't start to learn how to practice until my 30s! (When much of my life was taken up with parenting, so I didn't have time!)

I didn't start to improve as a musician until my 40s!
I'm going to say this again in case you haven't heard this one: I was a talented writer and it did *nothing whatsoever* because I hadn't put in the work, and I put in the work for ten years (subtracting the bit where I had to quit for my mental health) to write Witchmark

talent alone could *never*

I see quite a few names I recognize.
Distraught, enraged, and tired. An author cc’d @fiyahlitmag on an email to The Writing Atlas, a site dedicated to “cataloging short stories.” There are 130 FIYAH stories listed with (presumably) AI summaries. Some have LINKS to a Dropbox folder. Our issues aren’t publicly available for scraping.

Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday.

It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

We say "believe women" and "oh but his books are so important" in the same breath. "Believe women" and "that fourteen-year-old led him on, he's a genius, we need him." "Believe woman" and "we prefer the wolf."

This is how whisper networks are born. It's not gossip. It's self-protection when you need the safety of those barn walls, and know they won't put the wolf out just because you name his fangs.

This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So:

In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.
the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

A big problem in the industry is how many people conflate "Not a danger to me" with "Not a danger to anyone." And I keep seeing the terrible impact of that so maybe stop doing that.

Why don't they say anything?

Well, because when it happens to YOU, if you say something, that's frequently the ballgame. You get driven out of your community; you get to see what the people you thought loved you look like with the masks off. And way, way too many of them are monsters.

We have decided the world needs short fiction clubs instead of just book clubs. All those people who don’t finish a book in time and fumble their way through the meet-up can switch over and live a shame free life. Selfishly I recommend picking your material from a plucky, small press magazine.

Deleted a post about “what’s your least favorite song” because the vibes are bad enough already.

Instead: what’s your favorite song that has a long title, say at least 6 words long?

Mine: “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” (Pearl Jam)
