This is about as sick and cruel as it gets. This policy is in place to stop grocery stores from OVERCHARGING people using SNAP.
The Trump administration, while it illegally withholds SNAP benefits, is telling grocers they can't offer discounts to people on SNAP.

The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

study after study after study shows that literally just handing people money and telling them "do what you want with this" reduces homelessness, increases food security for children, makes it more likely people will find and retain jobs.1

The centrist "D66" party, running on a platform that includes a universal basic income, won the most votes, positioning its leader to become the new PM. I tell you what, though: I've come to have a very basic problem with the formulation "if liberal government doesn't do XYZ, fascism rises." This to me reflects one of the deepest & most enduring blind spots among the broad left coalition, namely ... they don't believe in the right.
