Or IRC? Is that still a thing? a/s/l?

I’m getting ads on social media for an AI that will help me diagnose my patients. I am not a doctor.

Tech has gone too far. I think we need to roll this all back to like, what, ICQ?

I think this is probably accurate, but really points to a larger question:

Should the Emergencies Act be amended to provide criteria for federal responses to organizational failures in regional and local governance?

Today I’m going to Costco to buy frozen things to put in my freezer I bought from Costco.

I’d never heard of this particular moment in history. Truth is stranger than fiction…
In 1943, Knut Hamsun gave his Nobel Prize to Joseph Goebbels.

In 2026, Maria Corina Machado gave her Nobel Prize to Donald Trump.

History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes.

Dear Battery Industry, I've got you a new slogan 😜🔋

Could even have something like battery and drive units shipped in from China, with the bodies and the rest manufactured and/or assembled here. Could be a good model.

I think BYD had previously built a small plant to try to sell EV buses in Canada… I’m sure some kind of a deal could be made
January 16, 2026 at 4:30 PM
Was a nice car. Very fun to drive.
January 16, 2026 at 4:29 PM
Yeah, Polestar was established here before those tariffs. I’m not sure they would be making any money at present, probably just holding on and hoping for a change like this one to come.
January 16, 2026 at 4:25 PM
When we were shopping for EVs last year, Honda wasn’t even selling their EV SUV in Manitoba at all.
January 16, 2026 at 1:55 PM
Right - so I had a polestar rental last year, very nice EV. Used to be a Volvo sub-brand, now both are owned by Geely in China. That was a Chinese built EV, already in Canada. Can’t buy one in Manitoba at all, nearest service from Winnipeg is Toronto.
January 16, 2026 at 1:54 PM
Could be a good place to begin - everything has to start somewhere! Happy Friday to you too!
January 16, 2026 at 1:48 PM
Yeah, I think that’s all still too small to make the national-scale business case work. Availability of basic parts is poor for low volume models, and viability for rural residents (who drive much higher mileage) isn’t going to be built by low volume vehicles only serviceable in large cities

Our first break from US auto and import policy. A big day.

Canada is big! A challenging market to serve well.
January 16, 2026 at 1:09 PM
Like Volvo sells 15k units per year in Canada, supporting a limited dealer network with essentially no rural service, so if 3 of the big Chinese players split that quota that’s what’s on offer.

Subaru, which isn’t a huge brand, sells over 60k per year in Canada.
January 16, 2026 at 1:05 PM
I’m glad to see this deal moving forward, but not sure about that 49,000 vehicle quota - I’d wager that’s too low for anyone to build out a national dealer and service network. Will likely see someone like BYD come into focused markets centered on Vancouver and the GTA, maybe Quebec.
Great news to wake up to. These EV tariffs were always a terrible idea. The North American auto makers should learn to make competitive smaller electric cars, not have the government effectively force people into buying more expensive and more destructive.

Carney reaches tariff-quota deal with China on EVs, canola | CBC News
Prime Minister Mark Carney says he has reached a deal with China to allow tens of thousands of Chinese electric vehicles into the country in exchange for lower canola duties.

What is wrong with tacos and spaghetti every week?!? #tacotuesday
January 16, 2026 at 1:37 AM
Oh goodness - I don’t know if I could say that Costco has saved me any money. I’m sure I have gotten more food/stuff for the same cost a bunch of times, which presumably adds up to savings in the grand scheme.

But do I then buy an Advent LEGO centerpiece I don’t need? Yes, yes I do
