Our friend Mr. Frederickson lost his battle with terminal cancer over the weekend. He'd worked for a year to translate the sequel to his favorite Sega Saturn RPG "Mystaria: The Realms of Lore" but passed it to others in his final days. His story:

Unexpectedly had to put my cat Mo' Biscuits down today. He suddenly started having trouble walking over the weekend which then progressed to him no longer eating. He would have turned 20 this year. If you ever stayed the night he likely tried to snuggle with you. I love you Mo.

If you are in Seattle, please go patronize this store because this is amazing content/promo 😂 (laughing to keep from crying, and I do kind of low-key want that orange spider plant I have never seen that before)

This week is the 25th anniversary of SNES Central! nz126x has provided me with a prototype of Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy) to release for the occasion. The game is nearly complete, but has debug features and some missing levels. #SNES snescentral.com/review.php?i...

No joke though if there are crazy Animal Crossing New Horizons people who are crazy enough at reversing the code to some extent to find the SNES emulator (NES too but especially SNES) I'm down for addresses or GHIDRA/IDA Pro projects and shit lol

As part of SNES Central's 25th anniversary, I just published a prototype of The Brainies, which appears to be transitional between the US and PAL releases. Many thanks to @hiddenpalace.org for sending this my way! snescentral.com/review.php?i...

I had digitized some VHS tapes for a friend, on one tape was a Spike TV Amazing Videos marathon, and ESPN2 covering 2006 Women's Tennis finals and a NCAA college football game, I cut all the commercials out and uploaded it to YouTube. I did not expect anything to come of it. youtu.be/GNtuJTCitEo

Who coined "Metroidvania"? It wasn't @jparish.bsky.social, and he'll be the first to tell you. Besides, there are far more interesting questions, like: How did it spread? Evolve? And what's it got to do with rickrolling?

Watch til the end for a post-credits sting.

Last month at PRGE, we held a reunion panel with Nintendo employees who launched the NES. Hear from Bruce Lowry, Gail Tilden, and Lance Barr about how the scrappy staff at NOA defied all odds and released one of the most iconic game systems ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2WDfsiLiRA

STOP THE PRESSES.

The ROM for the unreleased Famicom RPG Splatter World has been released (in a thread on 4chan, of all places). I've tried it myself, and it does seem to be genuine. If it's a fake, it's a damn good one.

Expect (more) coverage on West Mansion soon.

Agentic AI feels like everyone using a leaf blower at the same time. It saves someone time only by pushing that time & effort to someone else. Customer Support use cases being touted as a great example always seem to fail to ask the people receiving support rather than the business who saved money.

wrote up a bit of info on a less common US revision of Micro Machines for the NES, featuring a pretty nasty bug, discovered just a little too late and then worked around by using a PLD to patch a single *bit*. this is what day one patches looked like in 1991!
