“Human identity is no longer defined by what one does, but by what one owns. But we’ve discovered that owning things and consuming things does not satisfy our longing for meaning.”
Jimmy Carter Was Right About Materialism but, Alas, Wrong About Us
“Too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption,” he said in his 1979 “Crisis of Confidence” speech. If only we had listened.

This is a really excellent paper from Italy that shows that austerity fuels far right support. Part of the nostalgia for the past that the populists drew on is a nostalgia for a visible and effective public service. 1/

Showing that reduced access to public services fuelled far right support in 🇮🇹

Existing work on far right highlights globalization & migration grievances, what about people’s experiences with the state?

We use 🇮🇹 reform to find out

Looks like Germany is heading towards a CDU-led grand coalition again. Best outcome, for sure (eg. for Europe and Germany). But it will probably also mean more support for AfD and BSW in the medium term.
Germany, Allensbach poll:

CDU/CSU-EPP: 37% (+1)
AfD-ESN: 17% (+1)
SPD-S&D: 15%
GRÜNE-G/EFA: 10% (-0.5)
BSW-NI: 7.5% (-1.5)
FDP-RE: 4% (-0.5)

+/- vs. 28 September-11 October 2024

Fieldwork: 2-14 November 2024
Sample size: 1,049

🚨🚨 Inspired by fellow EU nerds, I did a first attempt in creating a starter pack on European law and politics (defined in a broad sense) collecting some of the people I really think you should follow in this area. More names will be added but a bit exhausted by this work.
