Worsens integration in both directions. Makes it impossible for newcomers to settle and build a proper life. And encourages everyone else to see and treat them as interlopers.
The basic problem with the temporary refugee status policy - especially one lasting up to 20 years - is it leads to very few removals (based on Denmark's experience) but does significantly worsen integration.

Many have refugees in their family’s past. My husband’s uncle by marriage was on Franco’s death-list (he was anti Franco). He escaped over the Pyrenees + to 🇬🇧 where he met OH’s aunt.
Just as well, as when his mum died, they took him in/brought him up as their own

Coverage of the refugee proposals demonstrates why we have such a broken political system. Endless focus on left-wing anger and right-wing support. Basically nothing on whether the reforms will work. They will not, which is why we'll still be here having the same debate in three years.

I’ve had the same thoughts..

The idea of a UK government stealing Jewellery from asylum seekers makes me deeply angry.
Shabana Mahmood casually saying they're gonna take migrant's jewellery off them has got me thinking about that scene in Schindler's List where the Jewish family wrap family heirlooms in bread and swallow them.

What the fuck are we?

The reasons appeals are needed is because the Home Office initial decision process, by its own admission, is so poor. What Mahmood is saying is that she will prevent people who absolutely need asylum in the UK from getting it. Right to appeals are essential.

Do ministers ever think about the message their rhetoric on "handouts" and "golden tickets" for migrants sends about whether this is a government for people like us?

Twenty years is not a probation period, it is a lifetime. If someone has lived here for nearly two decades, worked, paid taxes, raised children, and built roots, then to say “pack your bags, your country is safe now” is not policy, it is cruelty dressed up as process.
