New paper!! Hermann Wigers and I used OpenAI to generate and analyse 11,800 stories "from" 236 countries: Norwegian stories, Chinese stories, American stories, etc. We found that GPT-4o-mini tells the same story over and over. open-research-europe.ec.europa.eu/articles/5-2...

TechCrunch writes that OpenAI will charge $20,000 a month for access to an AI agent that can do “PhD level research”. Maybe all the PhDs and postdocs recently fired by DOGE should band together and sell their services as “AI agents” - apparently some people will pay more for robots than people.

"This much destabilization of reality is unhealthy" is a warning I take pretty seriously from this source.
Destabilization of reality in the US is about to reach surreal heights. Protect your mind. Monitor stress levels. Do not doomscroll--it does not help. Be selective about when and how long you expose your brain to this. Do what you can when you can.

Radagast goals
SARUMAN: Lands a tenured position while still finishing his PhD

GANDALF: Trail of post-docs and teaching posts. People never sure what his institutional affiliation is. Drops in 'yeah that was when I was in Rhûn for 90 years'

RADAGAST: Lives by proofreading and eating the dandelions in his garden
Academics love Lord of the Rings because it's about a researcher (Gandalf) who does their dissertation on an obscure topic (Hobbit lore), wanders around doing post-docs, gets destroyed in the question session from hell but triumphantly returns and gets to take the golden-boy prof (Saruman)'s job

GANDALF: Hey Saruman, so remember when we were PhDs and you were on your way to have port and cigars with the prof you told me that 'this Hobbit Studies nonsense is a fad and will never get you tenure'

Debating an asshole's intent is so boring and useless. If the Nazis are acting on the assumption that it was for them that matters more than if he might possibly have done an oopsie slip up into an extended right arm.

You know who are not confused, or uncertain, or mealy-mouthed about this? The Germans. Who might have some insight into this matter.

The best thing about David Lynch was that he never softened his weirdness for others. The dude refused to mask it, at all.

Can you imagine how much less stress he had to put up with, not expending a single ounce of energy trying to hide his essential weirdness.

Or we could just read Borges.
Harvard and Google AI mapped one cubic millimeter of a human brain. It took up 1.4 petabytes of storage just in pictures of the specimen. So the entire brain would take ~ 1.6 zettabytes of storage, cost $50 billion, and require 140 acres. It would be the largest data center on the planet— one brain.
Full scan of 1 cubic millimeter of brain tissue took 1.4 petabytes of data, equivalent to 14,000 4K movies — Google's AI experts assist researchers
Mind-boggling mind research.
