Imagine being a new math teacher serving your own community and the school district you graduated from and now work in gives you a pink slip just two months after your house and your town burned down in the fire. My teacher homies need help. My plea:

A Los Angeles-area teacher reflects on promises by state officials after 115 teachers, many devastated by the fires, received layoff notices.

Stories like these are important to personalize what Trump/Musk policies are doing. Too bad so few people read the Sacramento Bee and other legacy media these days

Students across our district high schools organized a walkout yesterday and converged on city hall to voice their opposition to ICE. Community members showed up along the 3mi walk from our campus to pass out water and snacks to the youth. Beautiful scenes all around.

Children never deserve this. It breaks my heart.
Recently returned to school. About 200 students & 12 staff lost their homes in the fire.

And students tell me they’re terrified that ICE will take their family.

And students tell me they’re afraid of FAFSA and what Musk will do with their info.

The worst of times for so many of our students.

Really inconceivable how many multigenerational, working-class households in my school community suddenly just turned to ashes. Whole residential blocks. Sharing this list of GoFundMe’s for those who wish to contribute what they can directly to the families themselves.

I can’t begin to express how bad these fires are. Friends have evacuated to our house and other friends are packing up what they can to evacuate and we are wondering if we are going to have to evacuate too. It’s such a colossal shitshow.

Getting pics and videos from dear students and colleagues of their homes burnt to the ground. Multigenerational households turned to dust. It’s not even close to over, and all I can do right now is just sit and watch and send love.
I’m still good. Unknown number of students and colleagues have lost their homes, fire still spreading.

This is *exactly* the neighborhood Octavia grew up in and wrote about in Parable of the Sower. And she tried to warn us.

Fire weather in January. The outlying areas of Los Angeles are burning, my school district just shut down, and evacuation orders are expanding. I’m good right now where I live but many of my students are packing and fleeing as I type this. Long night ahead 🙏🏾

Happy Independence Day to Haiti! 🇭🇹

The Western Hemisphere owes a huge debt of gratitude to the little island that wrested its independence from its captors.

World powers have tried to make Haiti into an example after it fought for its freedom, but the spirit lives on.
