PhD • Multi-Cultural Video Game Production: Migrant Developers in Japan
Pinned
Because there is no industry body that will aggregate the total number of foreign employees in the Japanese video games industry I have to do it myself. And that's how I spent my day calculating percentages and totals. Just curious, is anyone interested in the numbers?

Reality is becoming a luxury. Before the Industrial Revolution, everyone lived with handmade things because there was no alternative. After mass production, handmade didn’t disappear, it became rare, expensive, & status-signaling. The wealthy got craftsmanship. Everyone else got the factory version.

A while ago I went to Nanba for to do some fieldwork only to realize that most of the district is a super potato, a bunch of maid cafes, a bunch of card trading shops and the most hyper real gacha machines in existence

It's always a humbling experience to re-read papers from your first year of university. Glad to be able to say that even back then you could already see the potential buried beneath the chaos.

Dear EU scholars, I BEG of you to also include the name of the country when you announce your roundtables and conferences. You can't possibly expect everyone to know every European city just because it's in Western Europe. Including the name of the state/country after a city is not a terrible idea

During the DiGRA workshop I co-organised with my colleagues on game work migration one of the best points came from Aphra Kerr who pointed out that migrant stories can be co-opted by far right discourse and that it is our responsibility to be mindful of that when working with interview data.
