Speaker Johnson is officially keeping the House in recess again next week. This will be the eighth consecutive week the House has been out of session. The chamber hasn't met since Sept. 19. Adelita Grijalva, who was elected on Sept. 23, has not been sworn in.

I’ve been writing for a long time about contested and evolving meaning of economic terms like “free enterprise,” and I’m struck that pollsters can ask people whether they have a “positive or negative” image of “capitalism“ or “socialism,” without defining the terms.

This is a myth. By most measures—trade being an important exception—in 2016 Trump ran as a bog-standard conservative Republican on economics: tax cuts for the rich, taking away health care from millions, deregulation, conservative anti-worker judges, opposition to minimum wage increases, etc.

Also, I am once again begging people to go read the actual party platforms of the two parties from 2016 to 2024. It’s immediately obvious which party has focused on concrete policies to help “working class Americans.” We don’t need to do this anymore.
