It occurred to me over breakfast that the social consequences of many people believing that LLMs are intelligent might have a lot of similarities with what has happened with many believing in a god, and it ruined my day honestly.

Heli vid from last night of the fire at Mangatepopo in Tongariro National Park.

Devastating in our premier national park.

Please stay away so firefighters can do their jobs...

Probably they just see I’ve left facebook and are checking I’m not dead

I sent off an email to an old friend earlier this year and since then I’ve had 3 other old friends send me emails. Not sure if we’re all going through mid life crises or the world is going to shit and we’re looking back, but it’s nice to reconnect either way! Leaving facebook might have helped too.

Wreck it Ralph but the game characters rise up and rebel against the game developers for having tortured them relentlessly in all sorts of horrific tests during development

I’ve started commenting things when I come across them in my code like “//this is a bit fucking strange dave” and it’s an excellent trigger to fix things. 9 times out of 10 I’ve fixed the issue and deleted the comment within a few minutes where I would have moved on and forgotten otherwise.

I’ve made it so multiple tribes can be simulated in single player too, so you can play hotseat multiplayer, queue things up and hand it over, and it works really well! Turns out Sapiens is a turn based real time strategy game haha.

My todo list probably looks a little different to yours

This is correct. It’s VCs who spend their time doing drugs and inventing weird religions, executives who have boners about firing workers, and non-technical hucksters who are pushing this stuff. The vast majority of people doing actual technical work on the ground feel the way this piece describes
Okay, for the folks who asked: here's the majority AI view, writing up the reasonable, thoughtful view on AI that the vast majority of people in tech hold, that gets overshadowed by the bluster and hype of the tycoons trying to shill their nonsense. anildash.com/2025/10/17/t... Please share!

I don’t doubt we are spending less, but this only counts spend at NZ based merchants. How much of this is due to a shift to offshore spending eg Temu, Spotify etc?
Same data but just for September months. Completely unnecessary self flagellation. It's like all the lessons learned on the need for fiscal kick-starts are being roundly ignored. Small island, housing ponzi, rogergnomics, 8-wire, whip the poor exceptionalism. (2/2)

It’s starting to get tricky to find what I’m looking for in the Sapiens lua code, so I thought I’d run cloc and it’s past 150k lines of lua now! Getting lost occasionally is probably excusable 😆

Saw Graham Norton last night, Taylor Swift mentioned how she found side passion projects helped her get through the hard work, and I couldn’t agree more. You can’t just grind your way in a single direction forever, it’s bad for you and bad for what you are creating.

I’m missing working on Tui and Waraki, they still have so much promise, but Sapiens is getting all my attention at the moment. Conflict is feeling like a keystone feature, it’s bringing everything together.

The pressure on families and kids to attend national competitive events in other cities Is too much. It’s expensive and wasteful, and very difficult to avoid. Seeing businesses boast about all the money they make from the visiting families grinds my gears.

If you chop up soft licorice and dark chocolate, and mix it with tamari almonds, the result is an epic snack, but not too moorish. That is my recipe tip for the decade

It was really tricky to find rivers to place the tribe locations, given how the rivers are generated. I managed to get quite close algorithmically, but I can't reverse the perlin noise based offsets, so it takes a few iterations heading downhill too.

The guitar hasn’t been allowed in the office this week and I’ve definitely got more work done. It’s just too easy to lose an hour all of a sudden.
