I guess I’m here now, so I guess I’ll introduce myself. My name is Nava & I taught Latin to young students for just shy of 25 years. Still heavily involved in pedagogy & teacher training, but working on reception of heroines of Gk myth in YA in the comp lit dept at Northwestern. Giving up 🐦 hurts.

A reminder to get your shots and that if you’ve not been masking around people outside of your household, now is an excellent time to start
the damage to the US health system as a whole has barely begun to kick in. if this flu season is on a larger end (like experts suspect it could be), then those cracks are going to start becoming much more visible
The MAHA & MAGA crew now running the federal public health & health research systems—RFK Jr, his Great Barrington Declaration implementers, & their anti-vaxx & conspiracy theory & influencer & woo-promoting compatriots—have been a real wrecking crew, & I fear they’re only just getting started 😢

I want to tell a story about this. I was at the Acropolis Museum in Athens showing some esteemed scholars the statue in question and discussing its features when a woman approached and said, "Can I ask you a question about this sculpture? You seem to know about it." I said, of course!

What I meant by this is if you don't know why someone is doing something you find annoying—buying soda, speeding, yelling, stealing, spoiling their kid—you can just as well make up a good story about it as a bad one. And if you always imagine these strangers are good, you'll be happier for it.
why people buy junk food on SNAP: many people on SNAP are on chemo, or dying, or both. Others are taking psych meds that make them crave sugar. Others have five year olds with birthdays. Some are quitting smoking, or pacifying an abusive dad. You don’t know, so don’t guess.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the push for AI comes at a time when people are suffering from covid-induced brain issues. People are actively impaired and struggling (and refusing to acknowledge that repeated covid infections are the most likely cause). But hey! AI can help look functional
