I'm Lyndall; I started a zero-waste fashion business in Alberta. On BlueSky to process my fashion school burnout and resulting health issues (MCAS), and yell about greed 😠 and sustainability 😊.

Closed my website because I've been dealing with health issues and couldn't realistically afford the Shopify renewal fees while I'm not actively working on it.

I felt like nobody would miss it but today somebody commented on the YouTube video I did with Minji Lee looking for the site.

I'm pretty sure the introduction of the late = 0 policy in the second year of fashion school is what broke me.
People of academia! How common is it to have a late = 0 policy?

In my second year of fashion school the policy changed from each late day is 10% off your mark, to an automatic late = 0 policy, and I'm wondering how common that is in post-secondary education.

@duckgoesoink.bsky.social welcome back to BlueSky! (Glad they let you back on, though why they removed your account in the first place I don't know.)

Can’t quite believe it’s been 6 years since I released my 1st #zerowastepattern under the indie name MILAN AV-JC. This wrap dress still feels really special to me.
⬇️The pattern is available for free here. Ideal for beginners!

Aundi Kolber (therapist) calls trauma, "anything that overwhelms the nervous system's ability to cope" and HOO BOI did fashion school overwhelm my nervous system's ability to cope.
I joked about having PTSD from fashion school but I often worried I was being dramatic.

I keep going into freeze mode just thinking about writing about how college trauma came up in a dramatic way last week.

I WANT to tell the story but I'm freezing up just thinking about thinking about it.

So many excellent thoughts here on sustainable fashion, craft, marketing, and over-consumption.

(And once again so many problems in the world circle back to greed — like when one handbag is considered Not Enough.)

My fashion school education failed me in this regard, because nobody taught us how to do time management related to garment construction, they just sort of expected we'd pick it up by being super busy and NEEDING to manage your time effectively.

I didn't pick it up. It just burned me out.
"Part of a fashion school education is learning time management; not just mastering construction skills, but understanding how much time each step of the process will actually take, and working methodically instead of saving a bunch of finishing touches for the very end. . ."

2010s Google would know what sewing with the grain is and how it's different from cutting with the grain.
Sigh I REALLY miss the internet of the 2010s for sewing blogs in particular. . . there was so much incredibly helpful information that sewists would share on their personal blogs.

Nowadays I search for "sewing with the grain" and just get basic stuff about grainlines and cutting fabric.

Do you ever think about how The Dose Makes the Poison, that things are not inherently toxic, but they become toxic when there's too much?

Fast fashion is toxic because it's Too Much.

I've seen a lot of panicked reactions from small fashion businesses to the No Buy 2025 trend where they say "actually a no-buy year isn't the answer, you need to support local and small!" and uuuhhh I have so many conflicting emotions about this.

Maybe we like to talk more about climate change than we do about Greed because greed is something we also have to fight in our own hearts and lives, but climate change exists out there?

Or IDK maybe Greed feels all quaint and religious-y?
"Climate Change is the mother of all issues. This crisis both dwarfs and encompasses any other issues we may care about." (secondhandsustainablity on IG)

Only, it doesn't. . . Because the problem underneath climate change is greed and exploitation.

You can block people for literally any reason, you don't have to wait for them to do something nasty to you first. Or even interact with you. You can block because the vibes are bad. You can block because their comment on someone else's post annoyed you.

Blocking liberally --> peace
Ok wait

What’s your best, most impactful, small habit that you’ve embraced that you like and would recommend to others?

Note to self. (Me, with work.)
I find it so infuriating how often people will look at someone struggling and not making progress on something and just give the same cues over and over again instead of investigating what might be going on.

If there's zero progress, something is.
