1. A few thoughts on this Globe and Mail editorial. Over a decade ago, I interviewed a European senior civil servant on his country's approach to increasing the bureaucratic representation of ethnocultal minorities. He lost it on me, denouncing what he saw as the "unbearable smugness of Canadians".

If you want to get more people frequenting downtown businesses maybe fix the nightmare that is Ottawa public transit.

Between 7 and 10am this morning, 5 of 10 buses on my route were cancelled. I can’t rely on that at all.

1. M. Carney needs better Quebec advisors. Here is what he said this week: “The Plains of Abraham mark a battlefield, and also the place where Canada began to make its founding choice of accommodation over assimilation, of partnership over domination, of building together over pulling apart.”

To add one more layer to this. About 10 years ago my formidable former Globe and Mail colleague Renata D'Aliesio took on a mission to document suicide following the Afghanistan mission. In some initial reporting she found 54 Canadian soldiers and veterans had died from suicide. +
Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines."

List includes buses 6 and 7, which are the two buses I can take to go work. And which explains why I decided to drive today. But hey, according to our mayor, all is good because we have the lowest property tax increase amongst large Canadian cities.

OC Transpo’s nightmare week for bus cancellations hit some of its busiest routes especially hard. Now, several city councillors are calling for immediate action.

This is Ottawa city politics summarized to its core essence. A twenty-five year obsession, post-amalgamation, with "keeyping property tax increases low". Meanwhile, we have one of the most expensive (to user) and least reliable transit system in the country, as well as crumbling infrastructures.
Ottawa’s property tax increases have been the lowest of any major city in Canada.
