In any other major city in Europe the streets of Soho would obviously be pedestrianised and businesses/visitors on a glorious day like today could enjoy al fresco dining. But thanks to Westminster Council and the way we give outsized power to absurd local complaints, not here!

Every so often, it just comes back to me in full force. The political and economic order that allowed this man to come to power is obviously no longer tenable. The leaders who let it happen obviously have to be replaced. This is an epoch defining failure and we have to turn the page completely.

Even now I'm half wondering if this is some softening-up exercise for a more limited (but still dreadful) set of final proposals, but just to be clear - this would be an act of outright barbarity without precedent: not copying the Tories, worse than the Tories.

If you Google "inauguration day," you're greeted with an animation of fireworks forming the shape of the American flag. Google has never done something like this for the inauguration, sources told me, out of fear of appearing partisan. But that's changed now, with Sergey and Sundar attending.

Owner of the fash version of bluesky does that salute at the inauguration and political melts will still find ways to justify using his app so they don’t have to bother rebuilding their followings over here

The Conservative party accuses Keir Starmer of refusing to take child abuse seriously.

In other news, here's former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson complaining about £60 million being "spaffed up the wall" investigating historic child abuse cases

I see Graham Linehan is supporting Aontú in the Irish election today. For context, Aontú were formed on an anti-choice, Religious Right platform. Graham continually says that his "campaign" is for his wife & daughter's rights, but he's supporting a party that wants their bodily autonomy removed. 1/

Louise Haigh’s resignation will be felt in the north. She has a strong relationship with Labour’s northern mayors and has been strong on the key policies around bringing buses back into public control. I think there will be lots of frustration in combined authorities today.

I know "when they go low, we go high" is probably the reason she's actually resigned (hopefully), but this still feels extremely harsh on arguably Labour's most effective minister- through what has been a difficult start to government

John was our voice.

He made us feel we had a right to be in Westminster.

He was the first to give the North of England a political profile and paved the way for the devolution of powers to it.

He made politics real and lifted the lives of millions.

He was Our John.

RIP

Incredibly sad waking up and seeing John Prescott has died. A working class hero and one of the better Labour politicians of my lifetime. RIP

The Kemi Badenoch account on here is fake, her team tell me

Verification is clearly going to be important if this website is going to be the clear alternative social media platform, but why have loads of journalists rushed to say that Kemi Badenoch account is genuine, when seemingly anyone could make that account up?
