Last night I smelled something burning so I walked into the room where my wife's DnD group was playing and asked if something was burning. And this WHOLE DAMN ROOM of neurospicies said "No". Because they'd put the fire out a second before I arrived so TECHNICALLY nothing was burning WHEN I ASKED.

I first came to this conclusion DECADES ago, but it still holds: it is very normal and human to panic when confronted by a potentially life-threatening situation. But turning that off when you are on duty is part of the deal society made with you when they gave you a badge and a gun.
