if you feel our media landscape has increasingly become filled with abysmal narratives as complex as the average YA book, you should read graphic novels. it’s a balm to the soul to have this many contemporary stories written by people who have read literature and firmly have something worth saying
comics have been killing it the last few decades. it feels like there’s always several masterpieces to check out at the end of the year, somehow across both manga and graphic novels‼️

i was watching Ultraseven (1967!) and we got to this episode where this old guy builds robot humans to take over society. in the day, he's a toymaker who makes guns with crimson patches. and there's a clear deliberate military motif behind his intent. and then someone said: THIS IS JUST DRAGONBALL Z

so many people's view on art is 'this is how things are done correctly, this new artist is great because they are doing things the correct way', this very limited palette of what is right/wrong and imposing that view very vocally, forever repelling most artists who can actually see beyond all that.
