Trials and Tribulations
I stared at the screen on the rowing machine in front of me. 100-meter row in just a hair over 17 seconds. The fastest I’ve ever done…

This was incredibly cathartic to write, especially with everything going on in my life the last few years. We've leap frogged from one emergency to the next, and 2024 has been the worst. But, healing.

they were called "MMOs" once and you found success through lots of single-player content, deep systems appealing to both singletons and groups, support for guild drama, and customer service that wasn't akin to getting a root canal, none of which seems to have made the transition to "live service"
How on earth do you find lasting, meaningful success with a live-service game? Developers answer the "billion dollar question". https://bit.ly/47xnpSv

If I put together an impromptu Commander stream for @extralife4kids.bsky.social either this weekend or the next, where we just play Spelltable all day, would anyone be interested in joining?

I've had this chat with PR people and they know that supporting smaller sites and freelancers makes sense and would help build a healthier games media.
The problem is game publishers pretty much exclusively want GI cover stories or an IGN First and anything smaller isn't worth it.

I don't understand this mentality as long as the person/website has reputable people. How does it hurt you to provide a code? With how hard it is to get publicity for games of all sizes even "small" coverage seems like it would only help?

Your regular reminder that IGFs, BAFTAs, and the DICE Awards mean a hell of a lot more than The Game Awards do.
If you’re at GDC, attend the awards. If you’re at DICE, attend the awards. If you’re able, watch the BAFTAs via stream (unless you’re fabulous enough to be invited, of course).

can I just briefly say, VGC doesn't get as much attention as other personality-heavy publications, but I'm that bitch who traces news to the sources and this team has been *hustling* to publish these scoops lately.
Square Enix announced layoffs across “nearly all areas” of its Western business in an all-hands meeting earlier today, VGC understands.

While I agree that the POV of someone who doesn't like a given genre isn't valuable to a fan of that genre (which is most of the audience for a review), there's no rule that fans must be the *only* ones allowed to review anything. No single review is for everybody, which is why we need lots of them.
Wild opening paragraph, maybe you shouldn't be the one reviewing a Warriors game then
