"Never ask for permission to do the right thing."

My #Digicol25 golden nugget so far, in reference to starting a user testing program when your school doesn't support one.

But applies to everything, really.

I very much care about our new undeclared war with Iran, but the Phillies-Mets game is nationally televised tonite and if Fox cuts away at 10pm so Trump can be all "we bombed them with our bombiest bombs" I'm gonna be pissed

The president doesn't just get to declare things
"Trump is using tax dollars as a weapon to enact his social policy without the hassle of having to get Congress to pass a law. He would prefer to bombastically state what the law is & bully everyone into complying rather than test out his fantastical legal theories in court." — @lizdye.bsky.social
Maine fought the law, and Maine won

With an hour of each other I was served up an ad on my Roku for Raymour & Flanigan promoting furniture at "PRE-TARRIFF PRICING!" and then an ad on Spotify offering discounts on ChatGPT Plus for college students through finals and graduation

I remain unimpressed by this timeline

Killer asteroids from space.

Seems like another good reason not to defund science.
“This is why you have science! It’s amazing...the dinosaurs didn’t have this. That’s why they’re gone. We can do this and it requires funding science over long periods of time.”

Good thread from a prof at my UW alma mater explaining NIH overhead rates, what this move to cap them means for research universities (brought to you by Project 2025)

(plus my own reminder to myself that Trumpies can announce whatever they like but that doesn't make it real. At least not yet.)

I was there! If you find the Smithsonian Castle on the right, then follow over to the large screen on the left, I was right there.

I wore jeans (bad choice) and by the end of the day they had frozen to my thighs before I managed to walk back to an open Metro station.

Best inauguration ever.

Was just treated more kindly and professionally by the guy at Michaels helping me get my poster framed than I have been by 90% of the people I've gone to for help after my dad suffered a stroke over the holidays.

Thank you, Jared from Michaels.

The NFL Christmas broadcast/streamer schedule has been a real Grinch!

For folks spending the holiday in hospitals or nursing homes, or anywhere where you don't have total control of the TV situation, it's just that extra little bit of happiness deprived.

Went to a 9am matinee of Wicked so that I could sit by myself in the dark for 3 hours while still being engaged in a socially acceptable activity

(And I accidentally bought a ticket for one of those 4DX seats that move and shake with the action on screen and my was that ridiculous)

Our little university account gained 200 followers this week, half of them in 24 hours last Friday and into Saturday. And it's looking like this November will be the first month in 16 years of negative follower growth over on Xwitter.

I don't know what that means, but I'm not mad at it.
Hello to all our new followers on Bluesky!

13-hr day ending with breaking news headline at 7:45pm saying Trump is appointing the billionaire co-founder of World Wide Wrestling as secretary of education was my throw-my-pen-across-my-desk-and-just-laugh moment for the evening

Ooooo, yes (note to future winter self)
Recommendation:

At your public library, check out gorgeous art books this winter.

You know, that huge type of book you wouldn't necessarily buy -- but is a glory to keep company with for awhile.
