Couldn't find a Starter Pack for green computing, so gave it a go! 🌱💻 No doubt it's missing many great ones... please add! Hoping to include anyone discussing environmental impacts of compute (not just pure CompSci), the broader the perspectives the better! #greencomputing

A 7% decline in English birds in just 5 years is astonishing

The web of life is unravelling fast
Wild bird numbers continue to fall in UK with some species in ‘dramatic freefall’
Species index fell by 4% between 2019 and 2024 – although data shows woodland populations beginning to stabilise

Exciting to finally announce the first Green DiSC awardees!
The first six teams across three institutions in the UK and Europe have completed the Bronze certification earlier this year, so we thought we’d celebrate these pioneers! 🎉

The paper describes the outcomes of a case study with energy professionals, revealing several "ironies of energy system automation".

Google doc apparently has inbuilt AI now. Seeing an unfamiliar vertical line, I hovered over it. It suggested that I make some corrections to the blurb I was writing. The first one was to change "Dr. Devezer" to "He".

Thank you, AGI.

This is mind-boggling… you would have thought that “not contravening international law and human rights” was a no brainer as a starting point. Apparently not. Scary.
With Google removing their Responsible AI Principles, they no longer state that they will *not* engage in "Technologies whose purpose contravenes widely accepted principles of international law and human rights".
Concerns about surveillance and injury are also erased.

⏰ Deadline is tomorrow to apply to this reaearch role in Cambridge to work with me to make scientific computing more environmentally sustainable 🌱 part of the very cool (in my totally unbiased opinion) Green Algorithms Initiative

💫 The first role is about understanding computers' energy usage to improve carbon footprint monitoring, studying different computing equipment and tasks (simulations, AI...). A good understanding of computer science (hardware in particular) is a plus!

What is scientists' attitude towards the carbon footprint of their simulations? A mixed bag according to this survey in fluid dynamics: low awareness and low priority, but researchers know it can and should be improved.

Really great work here! @official-uom.bsky.social
