Birding, mostly … Cornwall, mostly …
Reposted by Alan
Nice to relocate the female-type Blue-winged Teal on Hayle with @lobb66.bsky.social this afternoon - after a week without a report and 45 minutes of trying to pin it down in crap light it felt almost as a good as a self-find! #UKbirding

A quality 45 minutes with @liamlangley1.bsky.social as we nailed the Hayle Blue-winged Teal originally reported last week. To go from a ‘dodgy looking Teal’ to full on blue forewing in flight was nice. #cornwallbirding

Requesting opinion/thoughts on a possible AGP with 30 GP at Hayle pm today. Retained summer plum, slighter in size, strong head pattern, grey-er background colour, thinner bill. Didn’t get underwing nor primary proj - face-on the whole time until it flew W #idhelp #cornwallbirding #please #begentle

Dozmary Pool had a decent selection this pm. 3 Pochard, Great Egret, Ruff, 1 Jack & 1 Common Snipe, 15 Wigeon, 20+ Teal, 7 Tufties & 1000+ Golden Plover in formation overhead. Also a sleeping Aythya which based on head shape was poss 1W RN Duck but time & light against me #cornwallbirding

Greenland Whitefront in the morning at Hayle. Swift (sp) in the afternoon at the Tate in St Ives. Thanks to James M for finding it. Seen heading east over the Island at dusk but it might roost on the church as an Alpine did a couple of years back. Will look for it tomorrow #cornwallbirding

Caught up with the shrike today which performed well. As did the now 2 Lesser Scaup. The chilled out male from yesterday now not so chilled out as he fussed around the newly arrived female #cornwallbirding

After having a shocker yesterday and getting bent out of shape with a certain gull - I needed to play a blinder today - and, BACK OF THE NET!, this Lesser Scaup popped up whilst looking for the RN Duck. As bird finds go - it’s a tap in from inside the 6 yard box - but I’ll take it. #cornwallbirding

St Ives Island. An ‘all-dayer’. 13 Leach’s Petrel, 2 Cory’s, 3 ESP, 2 Pomarine Skua, 1 Little Auk, 2 Puffin, 3 Little Gull, 8 Sootys & a Snow Bunting with 000’s Kitts, Auks etc. But the highlight was the Loggerhead Turtle off the NCI gully for a few mins. #cornwallbirding

Riverside NR was like Slimbridge this am. Record count (for me) of 57 Tufted Duck & 91 (!) Teal. Never had double figures of Teal before. Firecrest, Siskin & 7 Chiffchaff one of which briefly looked pale & interesting.

Of such things is #patchbirding made … 🙄

A couple of days around Pewley. Redpoll seem to be doing well this year. Loads of Song Thrush/Blackbird but just a few Redwing. Our 2nd (poss 3rd) Dartford Warbler of the year today courtesy of @mereccl.bsky.social, a Brambling over, Firecrest knocking about … is that Autumn done? #patchbirding

Male Pintail at Riverside was #patchgold tick today with a 28 strong flock of Tufted Duck. The recent fem/imm Redstart hanging on at Pewley means 25 ‘Redstart days’ for the site since late August. Pewley has had a great autumn. #patchbirding … now for some real rares … #cornwall … 🤞
October 7, 2025 at 5:46 PM
Pewley Down. Thought the Redstart days were over once the male departed 2 days ago. But no! At least 1 fem appeared today with huge count (for here) of 100+ Chiffchaff. Plus juv Whitethroat, several Blackcap, Firecrest & other bits. #patchbirding
October 1, 2025 at 5:10 PM
Pewley Down. Redstart still present yesterday evening. Yellow Wagtail over this morning plus plenty Mipits, Skylark, 14 House Martin, 5 Blackcap - lots of movement. Merlin picked up a Hawfinch call in the melee … which may be correct .. but I’m not convinced. #patchbirding
September 30, 2025 at 10:33 AM
Pewley Down. Lesser Whitethroat this morning was not expected. Our semi-resident Redstart was. But can’t be long now for departure. Since mid-August we’ve had at least 20 Redstart ‘bird days’. #patchbirding
September 26, 2025 at 5:10 PM
Pewley Down. Was expecting more Redwing than Redstart today … but yet another of the latter for the year. A late male. Seemed to be a lot of movement of pipits and hirundines today. Still time for the big one … #patchbirding

Not really a birding trip but ST Eagle, 2/3 Goshawks, several calling Wryneck, 1 RB Shrike plus Crag Martin, Spotless Starling, Spanish Sparrow & tonnes of Pied/Spot Flys were the highlights #portugal #birding
September 19, 2025 at 7:45 PM
Nothing says autumn like a coastal Wheatear - or a shy Pied Flycatcher in a Cornish valley. Walked around the area twice before it gave brief views in Cot Valley. Also a juv Marsh Harrier briefly over Marazion before it headed low west. #cornwallbirding
September 5, 2025 at 7:53 PM
@cbwps.org.uk St Ives Island. More Sabs than Kittiwakes. c30 up to 1pm by the crew. 2 Leach’s, 25 Cory’s, over 20 Arctic Skua, 3 Bonxies, 3 Black Tern, juv Little Gull, c10 Sootys, c10 Balearics, at least 2 Grey Phal and well over 50 ESP. With big tern passage - 1000+ of various #cornwallbirding
September 4, 2025 at 12:48 PM
@cbwps.org.uk Wryneck - Zennor. On footpath (not the road) up to Foage valley. Think it might be the same one James M found yesterday. #cornwallbirding
