A catastrophic M7.7 earthquake struck Myanmar today, rupturing ~200 km of the strike-slip Sagaing Fault.

The USGS PAGER alert is red, indicating severe damage and many fatalities. Impacts extend from Myanmar into neighboring countries, including Thailand.

What do we know so far?

14 years ago today, the M9.1 Tohoku earthquake occurred offshore Sendai, Japan, devastating the region. It was the first great earthquake to occur in a area with a dense GNSS network, which provided an unprecedented view of deformation during the earthquake. (1/3) ⚒️ 🧪

Two years have passed since the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye. In Türkiye, potentially damaging shallow magnitude 5 and larger earthquakes are concentrated near plate boundaries. The North and East Anatolian Fault zones and the West Anatolia Extension Zone are areas of high earthquake hazard.

🧪⚒️ A M6.8 earthquake just occurred offshore southern Japan, with max JMA intensities of 5- (equivalent to MMI ~VI). That's enough to frighten people and cause objects to fall, but shouldn't cause widespread damage, given Japanese earthquake-resilient construction.

Today's M7.0 earthquake in Northern California occurred in a highly seismically active area near the Mendocino Triple Junction where the North American, Pacific, and Gorda plates meet. Notice how this location also marks a transition from northwestern to northern recorded GPS motion.
