I believe the intent of "there are no rules" is in the process of how you get there.
Anyone who tells you there's no screenwriting rules should be locked in a room with a Line Producer for an afternoon while they explain how bad form makes their job of creating a working production breakdown that much harder.
Screenwriting is both an art, and a discipline.
