Here’s the coming-out letter I shared with my friends and family on Facebook eight years ago. Maybe something in there will resonate for you. True story at the end there.
On this day 8 years ago Stella Sacco Nov 20, 2017 • 8y Hello friends, tamily, and loved ones! I wrote you a letter here, but I don't want to bury the lede, since this might go a little long: I'm transgender, and I'm starting my transition to living lite as a woman soon. Here's my letter to you. A few years ago my now ex-fiancee and I were visiting my family for Christmas. One night I couldn't sleep and took some of my dad's Ambien. Ambien makes me act pretty goofy, makes me suggestible, and then makes me forget all about it after I fall asleep. As we were falling asleep she asked me to tell her a secret, and I immediately and matter-of-factly said "Sometimes I want to be a girl." I had never articulated that complete thought before, not in my head, and certainly not out loud. Years later, she didn't remember that moment. I shouldn't have remembered it. But I did. I had always thought that there was something different about me that was difficult to place. In the absence of an explanation, I simply wrote it off as feeling "weird" due to anxiety or depression. But after saying "I want to be a girl" out loud, it became harder and harder to think of that feeling as nebulous or undefined. In the last few months, I started thinking about questions I had about myselt that I had been able to handwave away when I considered them as isolated or individual. When I put them all together, as part of a pattern, a consistent answer started to form. Why did I never identify with male characters in media? Why did I always play as female characters in video games? Why were friendships with women so easy for me, and male friendships so hard? Why did I slip into a softer, more feminine cadence when alone with women I was comfortable with? Why did I always prefer slimmer, more form-fitting clothes? Why did my beard make me feel uncomfortable, even knowing it made me more attractive to a lot of women? What was that weird phantom limb feeling I got when I saw myself shirtless? What was that weird, nonsexual feeling I had when I saw that happy brunette in a cute dress on the poster at the thrift store? Why had I fallen in love with lesbians so many times? Why had I unconsciously formed a worldwide network of trans woman friends? Why did I have dreams about being a woman, or being in a woman's body, or dressing as a woman and getting complimented on how great I looked, sometimes as often as twice a month? Why was my favorite Sailor Moon character growing up the TALL BLONDE LESBIAN? I mean, that one's a little on the nose, isn't it? But it wasn't until I used FaceApp to see what I'd look like "as a girl", that | really understood. I felt like I finally saw something in the "mirror" I could identify with. When had any trans girl in history had the opportunity to see something like that, without already being on hormones? What a miracle, even if it's just an algorithm. I couldn't get that image out of my head. I'd read phrases like "If you wish you were a girl, you probably are one" and they hadn't really registered until then. So. Some of you might have questions, and rest assured, uh, I also have questions. I know a lot from seeing my trans friends live their lives in transition, and there will inevitably be commonalities, but this is my own life, and my own unique self. The most important thing I want to say is this: no matter what, I am still the same person you know. The things that you love about me will not change. I Will still be sweet and kind and funny and tell really bad jokes. I'll just...probably be a lot hotter. And yes, I still like women. (Isn't it weird that nothing about my desires has changed, but I'm gay now? That's weird, right?) I hope I can count on your support and love. If I can't, this is a free pass: you don't have to be in my life starting today. I don't say this to be dramatic, just pragmatic. I believe working through this will make me a happier, fuller person (literally, I'm going to fill out), but it won't be without challenges, and if you can't reconcile your ideology with the realities of my life and identity, I don't need that additional challenge. But, if you're just having trouble tackling this, if you've never really had a trans friend or loved one before, you can talk to me and we can figure it out together. As for pronouns and names -- I'II be going by Stella Michelle Sacco, and my pronouns are she/her. Yes, Stella was my late cat's name, but it was also the name of my drummer in Rock Band, which...actually, I don't know which is dorkier. Anyway, I'll be changing my Facebook name soon. One last thing. I recently asked my mom what she would have named me if she knew I was a girl when I was born. She said the doctor had told her that I was a boy months before, thanks to ultrasounds, and so she had never considered any female names. But there was one thing she wanted to share. When she went into labor with me, the nurses checked my vitals and prepared my station. When she asked why they had set up a pink blanket for me, they look confused and said that they had checked my heart, and my rapid heartbeat had indicated I was a girl.
