Thank you for this insightful summary of the broader benefits of protecting childhoods from poverty. Without being complacent the Scottish Child Payment has evidenced that effective social security measures can directly lift children out of poverty, it can be done quickly and effectively.

My cautious hope for a more compassionate UK gvt is gone.
The spring statement places the brunt of the ‘changing world’ firmly on the shoulders of those who can least bear it.
Poverty in Scotland is lower due to devolved policies like SCP but what will the repercussions on Scottish households be?
🚨 New Spring Statement analysis out now! 📣

Lower-income households are projected to be worse off by the end of this Parliament.

Delighted at the calibre and innovation of these projects. They are designed to support work over the next 3-5 years that has a high potential for delivering significant, long-term impact, bringing to life real potential in tackling insecure work that drives poverty in Scotland.
FUNDING We are excited to share details of funding for 10 projects with potential to deliver lasting change on in-work poverty in Scotland.

Emerging from our open call launched earlier this year, over £2.5 million has been awarded.

New @jrf-uk.bsky.social research reveals Bangladeshi, Black African and Pakistani families are up to 5x more likely to be living in persistent very deep poverty compared to white families in the UK.

We must continue applying a race equity lens to analysis of poverty.

Insightful thread on the interactions between employment, health and our social security system.
Good piece, and reflects much of what we covered in a pre-election @resfoundation.bsky.social report.

Policy makers have been playing ‘Whack-a-Mole’: hitting standard rates of working-age benefits, and now some of that pressure is showing up as rising claims for health-related benefits.
NEW: Is Britain’s welfare too generous?

Most countries pay workers who lose their jobs more than half of their previous salaries.

In Britain, unemployment benefits are *12%* of the average wage

Whilst these are great statistics for women in the labour market, the reality is without a working social and child care system, these stats are at the cost of women’s mental and physical health. We were told we could have it all……
Women in low-to-middle income families are now much more likely to work than three decades ago.

Employment rates for women in low-to-middle income families have increased from under half (47 per cent) in 1996-97 to nearly six-in-ten (59 per cent) by 2019-20.
