andy cohen's "am i excited about 2026? [pregnant pause] yeah. i... yeah. i mean, what's the alternative?" is the realest thing i've seen all night

I don’t think this is true? While the sex of a given child is ~random, the number of children one chooses to have is not, and couples will make different fertility decisions based on the sec of their existing children.
Because child gender is ~ random, we can estimate the causal impact of being a "boy mom" vs "girl mom" by conditioning on # of kids.

Mothers with sons are ~3% more Republican, while mothers with daughters are ~4% more Democratic.

Child gender has ~ zero effect on fathers.

Clap push ups have to be like the very worst exercise from a joint stress vs actual workout benefit perspective in existence, right? or do my elbows just suck?

I cannot stress this enough: if you or your child or you on behalf of your child treat admissions as a validation exercise rather than what amounts to a lottery you are begging for a massive hit to your ego. No matter how exemplary or impressive an applicant is it's just numerically punishing.

I still occasionally come back to how this year one of the biggest hit movies had the dual themes of
1) you must accept yourself for who you are.
2) boys are ontologically evil.

Once again, "imagine getting to place a side bet on your kids soccer game" is an indicator of severe levels of degeneracy and in a healthier/more functional society, we would nuke these ppl & their entire business model from orbit
Oh, no it’s even worse than that. I was in a pitch meeting for one of these that said “imagine getting to place a side bet on your kid’s soccer game”. Their plan was to bet on people completing everyday activities
Fuckin people watching Netflix making prop bets on what minute of the episode we’re first gonna see Vecna. People betting on whether it’s gonna be a Toyotathon commercial or an Activia commercial. Just a little QR code in the bottom corner of every show asking you to bet on everything.

Laura Kelly looking at these numbers and wondering if she has one last job in her.
Identical turnout to 2022, but a completely different universe

13% to the left of 2022/2024 despite midterm-level turnout

Electoral hedonic treadmill in full force. Is a 16 point over performance a disappointment? What about 18?

Sometimes I’m reading a thread about AI and kind of nodding along and suddenly I feel like I’m at “ape holders can use multiple slurp juices on a single ape” level comprehension.
i feel like people think about this weirdly.

a very large LLM is the function space necessary to contain everything on the lower-dimensional manifold of natural language, which is bounded by something other by the representational complexity of functions.

Other than a bunch that are wayyyy too personal to post into the aether, probably when some coworkers were arguing about who got to have me on their squad when the zombie apocalypse happened.
What is the best compliment you ever received? Putting aside whether or not you believed it.

Lot of thoughts about That Article, but one thing that made me scream. The cost of childcare was not zero! That our system devalues feminized care labor doesn’t make it actually free. Opportunity costs are a thing, childcare is more expensive because of Baumol, not because it was free before.

Rome-esque epic about the House of Valois-Burgundy.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Science will often take you to unexpected and delightful places. In this study, researchers hypothesized that riders in a crowded subway car would be more likely to offer their seat to a pregnant person if there were someone in the subway car dressed as Batman 🧪🦇

Semaglutide has the weirdest side effect I’ve ever experience. I’m hyper sensitive to caffeine all of a sudden- I went from ~4 cups of coffee a day to a single Coke Zero hitting hard enough to be unpleasant. Overall it’s a great drug ime but that came out of left field.

My most woke opinion would make me the Main Character on here, so no thanks.

My second most woke opinion would catch a 3 day suspension.

#3 is that everything is gender, except for gender, which is race.

This is why comparing the costs of healthcare writ large across generations is in many ways incoherent- it’s like asking if intercontinental flight is more expensive now than it was before WWI broke out.
This is especially true for medical care. Virtually any - any - type of cancer was a death sentence. The 5y survival rate for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1960 was roughly 14%. Today it is roughly 95%.
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

High level elected officials should get 7 figure income, have to put all their assets in a blind trust, and be subject to such withering and punitive financial disclosure arrangements that they won’t accept a ride home without reporting it.
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

Fun thing about Matty is that during the Biden years crime went down, deportations went up, unemployment and income inequality went down, and yet somehow even though the Biden WH did politics exactly how he’s asking we got…this.
