Hi! I'm Scottish and I like Turtles. Here's some Ninja Turtle stuff I've blathered about.

Plan is to either gradually import old threads from twitter and Mastodon or start over entirely. In the meantime:

If these new rules had been in place when I arrived, the country would’ve lost everything I became.

And so will countless children arriving now, if we let it happen.

Refuge isn’t weakness. It’s an investment. And the returns are human, immeasurable, and generational.

Britain once understood that. It can again.

I am proof... living, breathing proof... of what happens when a country offers refuge with a future attached.

Britain gave me a chance, and I have spent my life giving back.

They don’t see what Britain gains when it chooses compassion over suspicion.

Policies like this pretend they’re about “control.” What they actually do is choke off the very stories that make this country stronger. They don’t see the scared kid who might grow into a doctor, a teacher, a neighbour, a parent.

But if today’s rules had existed back then, temporary status, conditional belonging, reviews hanging over your head like storm clouds, none of this would’ve happened.

You can’t build a future on a fault line.

And because of that chance, I’m now a British citizen, an emergency medicine consultant, a husband, and a father of four.

My whole life, my real life, unfolded here. This is home, heart and bone.

I came to this country as a child refugee. No English, no certainty, no idea what my life could become. Britain gave me refuge.

Not on a timer, not with conditions attached, but with a chance to grow roots.

With such a small population in comparison to the rest of the UK but with some of the greatest minds that have contributed globally. How could this possibly happen, I wonder 🤔

Scotland has had a go at solving one issue with another - we've got a huge problem with people leaving the islands for the mainland, so we placed some refugees on Bute. It went well! They don't want to leave and we want them to stay, even if Syria is safer now!

'We can finally return to Syria, but this island is our home'
For the first time, Syrians fleeing civil war have a chance of returning home. But do those settled on Bute want to?

This is as bad as anything proposed by Reform.

Leaving refugees in permanent limbo and unable to build a new life in the UK would be a complete abdication of our humanitarian responsibilities

Nothing makes me believe in palpable, literal evil more than people who demand proof that a hungry person is hungry for acceptable reasons.
USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins plans to make all SNAP recipients reapply and prove "that they literally are vulnerable and they can’t survive without it.”

The 'genuinely disabled'

The 'literally vulnerable'

They keep moving the goalposts.

They were never going to fund SNAP. It's eugenics:
Trump administration will require SNAP participants to reapply for benefits
Food aid recipients are already required to recertify their information regularly. But the move is part of USDA chief Brooke Rollins’ effort to overhaul the program.
