The world would be a much better place if Trump and his allies had watched a little more Sesame Street as kids

@mitofficial.bsky.social this is an important start. But you need to follow the lead of your cousin up the river (Harvard) and call out government actions as the assault on science and knowledge and humanity that they are. orgchart.mit.edu/letters/furt...

Harvard gives me hope
Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

Where the trade war with China could go:

1) Trump retaliates again
2) China retaliates by stopping buying, or selling, US Treasury bonds
3) T bond market collapses. (Interest rates skyrocket )
4) Trump retaliates by defaulting on debt to (at least) China
5) economic chaos

Using the right language is important
Kidnapping.

Capturing a person against their will without due process is called kidnapping.

Transporting them to another country without due process is called human trafficking.

A squalid extrajudicial prison for people found guilty of no crime is called a concentration camp.
stop calling things deportation just because they call it deportation.

-You cannot legally deport people without due process.

-You cannot legally deport citizens.

-They are defining down deportation to break the law.

He must have shorted the market. It’s the only thing that makes sense . If he did and gets away with it, the old evil or stupid debate is finally settled - evil. If he did not, well, he is just stupid.

It occurs to me that a whole generation of people will likely grow up thinking that “business casual” means putting on pants

Thank you @cantwell.senate.gov . I am sure it was my call to your office this morning, asking for exactly this that led to your decision to do this. :-)
Senators Chuck Grassley (R) and Maria Cantwell (D) just introduced a bill to reassert Congress’s power over tariffs.

—President must notify Congress on new tariffs within 48 hours of imposition.

—Congress must approve them within 60 days or they expire.

@booker.senate.gov had it right. The power of the people is greater than the people in power. @cantwell.senate.gov and @murray.senate.gov , where are you?

In the shit show exposed by the Atlantic magazine, I found one positive thing to note. At least Elon was not in the meeting, making the decisions.

Mystery behavior of the day....

"I will miss our next call because I will be in Europe".

This happens a lot. Do they not have internet in Europe?

Here is a list curated by a friend of NIH grants that she knows that have been cancelled. Take a minute to explore it. (It works better on a PC than on a phone.) The scope is breathtaking and appalling. People will die.

Heads should roll. For even using an app like that. Even if the journalist had NOT been included. But no one will care

Hopefully, this will be the start of something bigger. Mercer Island, Washington believes in democracy.

Make no mistake. This is a war on science and a war on health. People will die.
The fall out from these grant terminations will be immeasurable. Important, life saving work will immediately stop. Brilliant scientists will be pushed out of the field or the country, ensuring that even if NIH funding is restored, the US will be worse off for generations to come.
my NIH grant was terminated today - the grant that pays my rent and my bills and my loans and my health insurance - because I study how to improve the lives and wellbeing of queer people #episky #medsky
