Sega had a huge lineup for the 1990 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Moonwalker, Phantasy Star II, and Golden Axe were some of the gems on display. Images: Beep! MD.

Another mention of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link being developed for the Super NES.

"Shimizu: Actually, the three of us were working on "Zelda II: The Adventures of Link" for the Super Famicom. But then the Nintendo 64 was released and we realized it would take two more years to finish."

getting into Ridge Racer has helped me to understand the core appeal of arcade-style racers and why it's sad when the market is underserved

they're for people who like the sense of speed, enjoy improving at challenges of execution over time, and - crucially - do not actually give a shit about cars

I marvel at how Jim Henson’s creative brain worked. This film was a presentation piece to the execs at CBS when he was trying to get them, ultimately unsuccessfully, to pick up THE MUPPET SHOW. If you’re a TV exec sitting in a boardroom watching this, there’s no way it’s not leaving an impression...

Contrary to what the monumental success of the original Pac-Man may suggest, creator Toru Iwatani was not given any kind of special benefits or rewards when the game took off.

whoa, Korean TV station SBS produced a 2-part documentary on tracking down "Akira Kid", the teenage Virtua Fighter prodigy who famously bodied the 1997 VF3 Maximum Battle international tournament hosted in Korea, only to abruptly disappear from the scene—it's on 🇰🇷 Netflix (no EN subs, afaik)

This documentary follows the search for a middle schooler who won the "Virtua Fighter 3" world tournament in 1997 — then vanished from the arcade scene.

I've had a promotional VHS for the test animation that became Batman: The Animated Series for a long time, I bought it on eBay in like...1999? The version they put as a bonus on the DVD said they lost the audio but uh, here it is. You're welcome Bruce Timm.

Maybe it wasn't childish if we were laughing at Link following this woman into her house for a little one-on-one session. In fact, it's part of a series-wide tradition of sexual healing.

Thanks to @mrtalida.bsky.social and @historyofhyrule.com for doing most of the sleuthing on this one!

Thanks, I appreciate it! I think the catalogues changed names over the years (earlier ones UFO Catcher branded instead of Sega Prize). Any ads/listings are of interest to me, so I'm looking forward to seeing those general Sega catalogues too!

I'm a member of your Patreon. I really appreciate the scans of the Sega Prize Autumn/Winter '93 catalogue you uploaded a couple of years ago. Last I looked there were a few more Sega Prize / UFO Catcher catalogues on auction sites, so if you intend to get more I'd gladly throw some ko-fi tips in.

Today is the 97th anniversary of Popeye's first appearance on the 17th of January, 1929. (Olive is older than Popeye by almost a ten years – but when you're 97 and 106, what's a decade?)
