I don't think people grasp Trump's plan to use the military to arrest, imprison and deport 20M people. Aggregate state/local/federal prison population in the US has topped at 2.3M (may not include all pretrial or jail terms). Soviet gulags processed 14M from 1930-1953. Japanese internment was 120k.

My lukewarm take is that "AI" is such a broad category that most discussions about it as a whole are incoherent.
LLM chatbots seem stupid, and I don't fuck with image/audio/video generation. Basically anything consumer facing sucks.
But commercial models, particularly bespoke ones, seem useful.

I had a couple legal clerical jobs that weren't great fits but that I was good at, so I went to law school to make more money and transition to a better practice area.

One thing I haven't seen discussed enough about leaning on LLMs instead of thinking is the pure shamelessness it encourages. The abdication of responsibility and sense that "ah well, the answer fitting machine lied what can I do" is bad when we're in a crisis of bad faith lying already.

Ironically, things like "end means testing" and "reduce the administrative and time burden to apply for federal benefits" would helpfully tick this box, but savvy moderates like Klein aren't generally focused on things like this where the public meets the government in practice
"maybe government should work better" is not an original, interesting, or particularly useful argument, much less any serious ideology

The competition, IMO, is the entire extractive mineral industry which has always been terrible but is also much more diversified than a single commodity.
The sugar industry seems uniquely evil in being affirmatively based on human suffering and exploitation from go. At least the oil guys could claim it wasn't particularly worse for worker than other extraction and that climate change was unknown for the first 50 years. Sugar has been evil forever.
