I unpinned my previous top post, b/c now I want to feature my fave pieces from my #sketchaday 2025 self-imposed challenge! I’m Laura, this is my art account, and this thread will be pinned to become my about me piece. I do illustration and cartoons, often riffing on a joke for multiple drawings.
A marker, ink, paint pen and paper collage drawing of my OC, Bela Lugosquid, a common squid, pale pink-grey with red and grey spots, facing left slightly, asleep. They are smiling (yes, I know, that’s not where their mouths are), and are wearing a pair of fake fangs, a black cloak with a red lining, white bow tie and vest, white shirt, and a red ribbon with a spiny Black Sea urchin attached to the ribbon by holding onto a gold ring. Basically, dressed like Bella Lugosi’s famous outfit* in Dracula (1931). Their tentacles and arms are drifting gently, with an arm on the right touching the edge of the cloak. Dream bubbles coming from their head feature an image of Bella Lugosi as Dracula from the movie poster (image sourced from IMDb.com). Bela Lugosquid is non-binary. They are fascinated by vampire squid, but too shy to actually talk to any actual vampire squid (and afraid of negative reactions). They are a very happy squid. They have dreams of stardom. I don’t know about the sea urchin; they usually don’t go that deep. A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing in my sketchbook. In the upper left hand corner, a white box with shadow lines has the hand-written text: “white potatoes are tuber-essentialist douchebags:” (yes, I’m going hard on this one! Pushing the boundaries!*). The main drawing is of an orange-pink yam (or sweet potato) in three-quarter profile, standing on root feet, with their sprout arms up in the air, leaning slightly forward, protesting (or yelling) at three white potatoes (who, ironically, are brown, because they haven’t been peeled) in a row on the right, in three-quarter profile, one in front, the second slightly behind that one, and lastly, a potato going off the edge of the paper (they’re half-visible). They have little beady eyes, and root feet and hands, with little potatoes growing on them (I love the little potato feet!). The lead potato is asking: “Are you a sweet potato or a yam?”, and the second one is saying: “…you can’t be both.”. The sweet potato (or yam) is protesting: “Why are you so hung up on labels?! I yam what I yam! …or NOT.”. The wall is pale blue-grey, the floor is medium grey, and there are shadows underneath all the tubers. In a small white box in the bottom right corner, the top of a white potato is visible, showing their black dot eyes and angry eyebrows. They are saying:” This is potato erasure!!”. *Or, y’know, doing the absolute minimum by acknowledging that trans people are people, and TERFs/“gender essentialists” are complete C-words. “Dryad of the Vines”: An ink line drawing of a female-appearing figure wrapped in vines, which are supporting them as they sleep. Their face is mostly hidden by their left arm (on the right), which is raised, with vines loosely wrapped around it. Their legs are bent up in a seated position, and their fingers and toes (six on each appendage) stretch out into vines. Their hair is made of vines, and drapes down behind them, and over their torso. Some of the vines have leaves and flowers along them, curling around in spirals and loops. They are nude, but have no visible gendered body parts, just the curves of their body giving an overall female appearance. A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of a toy mechanical mouse, facing left. The mouse is grey metal, with brass screws, and a brass key in the middle of its back. It is sitting upright on segmented articulated legs and feet (and toes) that are joined to the body with a round dome with brass screws. The head has large round eyes and ears edged with brass screws, with red lights in the center. The front legs and paws are also articulated/segmented, and are curled around to the nose, like the mouse is eating. The tail is long and articulated/segmented, bending as it reaches the ground, and goes to the left, behind the body. Background is blank. It’s a little toy mouse made of metal, with a key to wind it up. It’s cute, but I am not mechanically inclined, so I have no idea how it would actually move.

I raked a metric merde-tonne of leaves today, after cutting mille saplings to make wattle fencing tomorrow.

I have a whole day of stuff tomorrow. 🫠

A yellow leaf top right is saying “we are 3 inches deep!” (a lie; it was at least 4). A brown leaf middle left is saying “ha! Ha!”. A red leaf middle right is saying “we hide holes!”. A green-brown leaf lying sideways at the bottom is saying “and wasp nests!” (truth; it was, thankfully, dead, but it was a huge ground hornet nest). *This is a joke on the president saying that they don’t have forest fires in Sweden, because they “sweep their forests”. 🙄 A number of amusing memes were made, but the Roomba was the best.

I got Phantom Press’s ‘Yokai Lore’ (an art book), & was interested to see the idea of the “devil on your shoulder” has a corresponding Yokai: Amanojaku.

It is dark, and the monster is horned, has long orange fur, huge glowing eyes, purple hands and feet (that also look like hands) with long orange claws, and they are perched neatly, knees against their chest, with one thane on their knee, the other pulling on the person’s ear. This is a representation of the “devil on my shoulder”, a naughty creature that wants me to do naughty things, like hiding all the spoons (I’m in my 50s, committing actual evil is way too much work). My monster is snuggly, and is friends with the other voices in my head, especially Clive. They have a lot in common.

A colour photograph of Lucracia Ray’s adorable frog stickers from my recent order, laid out on my red sofa, with my small sketchbook top left, where I stick the extra sticker holding the recyclable envelope the stickers come in. There are 21 stickers, all of round cute frogs in various poses, my sketchbook, and a thank you card in the picture. My two favourites are a frog in a pink bunny hat eating a pink iced donut (top), and the bat-winged frog holding a tiny trick or treating pumpkin (far right). Created for the Vampires of Color charity zine. This one was sitting in my WIPs for a long time. As I was thinking about what other vampires exist in my world. I started thinking about sun dwelling vampires... Added a bunch of colors by accident but they stuck!

The top is also grey metal and gold rivets, with lights set into the interior top, allowing us the see the alien brain, and the glow of the green fluid. (The Axolotls developed their adoration as an entirely independent sentient species; the Brain encourages critical thinking.) The Axolotls write terrible poetry, and give weekly poetry readings. The Alien Brain still considers this an improvement over the previous experiment. The book is “Paul Clifford” by Edward Bulwer-Lytton, which is the book that starts with the famous line “It was a dark and stormy night.”. The Axolotls are pink, with brighter pink gills and darker pink spots on their bodies, and they are wearing blue overalls, with their tails sticking out of a hole in the back. They are all sitting, cross-legged, in a half-circle around the front of the Brain’s tank, holding books, and smiling at the brain. They all have huge black oval eyes with light points, and their noses are reflecting the yellow-green of the tank lights (they’re shiny!). One Axolotl, on the right, is staring at their book, which is upside down. Oops! Behind the tank is the cavern wall, in the shadows; on the left, is a bucket, and mop leaning against a red lettered poster that says “KNOW YOUR CLEANING FLUID!”, with a picture of a cartoon Axolotl at the top right, and a red “NO!” over a bottle of ammonia next to a bottle of bleach (don’t mix these!). On the right of the tank, there is a barrel of “Industrial Glass Cleaner”, but the label is partially turned so that the first two letters in “glass” are not visible. This was done by my OCs, The Watchers (small interdimensional mouse-like creatures in robes, whose faces are not visible), one of whom has their head propped on their elbows, leaning on the barrel. The other Watcher is peeking out from behind the left side of the barrel. Above them is a white poster with blue lettering and a pink border that says “BOOK CLUB! Tuesdays! Read along with the BRAIN.”. This is a very silly drawing, and a very long alt text.

WIP, “Moonbathing”. This was inspired by Anton Seder (natch), but it was a crocodile. 😁

It is night, and there is a large moon silhouetting the dragon’s head. One forepaw in crossed over the other, and their very long tail is twisted and curled on the rock below them. The dragon has no back legs, only webbed forepaws and swimming wings. Their head is tilted, so that their pupil reflects light like a cat. The sea is dark grey-blue, the sky is deep night blue. No stars yet. Inspiration: Anton Seder crocodile.

The left front feather is the trans flag (horizontal light blue, pink, white, pink, light blue), and the right front feather is the asexual flag (horizontal purple, white, grey, black)(the flag is usually the other way round, but I like it better this way - artistic choice). A ballpoint pen drawing from 1988 of the rood screen* in King’s College chapel, Cambridge, England. The drawing covers both pages in my sketchbook, going from one side of the chapel to the other. The rood screen is all carved in wood, and incorporates their pipe organ. There are folding chairs in front, and a person standing looking at the screen. The pipe organ is partially visible in the center top of the image. There is an arch in the center of the rood screen. *A rood screen divides the altar from the back half of the chapel. It’s a thing that separates the clergy celebrating the service from the lay people worshipping at the back. It’s a Catholic thing, but actually survives in more Anglican churches, because of the Counter-reformation in Europe. It’s a complicated thing. A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of a gem doris, a New Zealand nudibranch which has raised golden yellow and white bumps in between orange and blue patches. All nudibranchs are the prettiest, as far as I’m concerned; I love nudibranchs! This one grows up to 2.5 inches long, and is very lumpy (in a pretty way!), with flat patches of blue and orange that almost glow. This one is surrounded by pink coral. Much like water hemlock, pickled beholder eyes are delicious in their first year, but extremely toxic past that.
Also like water hemlock, beholder eyes can cause death to the unwary forager.

“Talk to the Fin” - A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of an impatient, eye-rolling mermaid waving away the viewer with their pectoral fin. This idea is based on the frog fish, an anglerfish variant that walks on their pectoral fins. Several species are mooshed together here, including the painted frog fish and the psychedelic frog fish (and, sort of, human). The upper body of the mermaid is rosy brown human tones with a white line pattern outlined in red. The head is shaped like an anglerfish seen head-on, with a wide frowning mouth, and eyes just above the mouth, no visible nose. The eyes are rolled up and to the right. The upper body is the same tones to the navel, with breasts concealed by crossed arms. The hands are finned, with no fingers. The body changes colour to yellow tones at the hips (the white and red line pattern continues across the whole body), with the mermaid’s head and upper body to the left, and the tail stretched out across the image to the right. She has two pectoral fins at left bottom like very short legs and feet, with the closer foot lifted up and to the right in a dismissive manner. The tail is large, with both dorsal and ventral fins, and a finned tail spread out at the end. The white and red lines continue over the yellow body/tail and the fins. “Chasing Joy” - A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of two nudibranch merfolk (Nudimers) chasing each other in a circle in deep water and laughing, with an octopus holding on to one’s tail. The Nudimers have bright yellow bodies and heads, with blue scales outlined in white, with white and gold spots all over. They each have a frill on the backs of their heads that match their tails. They also have yellow antenna-like tentacles above each eye. They are curled around each other in a yin-yang shape, one head up, one head down. The one with their head down has their eyes closed, the other has large black eyes. The octopus is orange with darker orange spots, looks happy, and is hanging onto the tail fins of the Nudimer with their head facing up. The background is deep grey, almost black, and there are gold and white dots in the water, representing bubbles. The Morning After the Party - A marker, ink, and paint pen drawing of a mercreature that looks like an American yellow spotted salamander (a Salamandamer, if you will!), lying on a beach of rocks and seaweed, with gentle waves washing lightly against their tail. The mercreature has their mouth open like they are tired (or hungover!), their eyes are red, and there is gold glitter in the water and on the mercreature (this is what happens when you party too long with the Disco Mermaid! It is entirely possible psychedelic glitter was involved; you never know when the Disco Mermaid is about. Drugs? No illegal substances here!) The rocks are grey, and there is green, purple, and yellow bladderwrack seaweed on the rocks and under the mercreature. (My Dad used to own a house in Bamburgh, Northumberland, and I spent a lot of time there; some of the beach looks like this, some is volcanic basalt, and some is the most gorgeous sand. Never found one of these, though! :D)
