We are writing the story of how students are seen, served, valued. & knowing the past impacts and influences the narrative. We must understand history to make the future better. (Slides from a recent keynote)

Todavía estoy aprendiendo, pero a los ojos del estado de Illinois, ¡soy oficialmente bilingüe! Descubrí la semana pasada que aprobé mi examen del idioma español.

With what’s happening in our world today, I’m hoping I can leverage my privilege and my bilingualism to help in some way!

Such an important point to consider.
December is really confusing for non-Christian kids in public schools. Holiday shows and decorations and constant Christmas music playing. I don't know if teachers really consider all of this from their perspective.

ESL/ESOL stands for English as a second or other language, NOT English as a SOLE language.

🌟even though in ESL programs the instruction is provided in English, students’ first languages should be valued, respected, & leveraged. 🌟

We need to keep talking about how weird it is for people to think they should have a say in reading choices for anyone's kids but their own. You're not in charge of what other people's children eat or wear or when they go to bed. Why on earth would you get to choose what they read?

Being a linguist is inherently political. We know that all language is equal and that being treated differently because of your languaging has to do with the body you inhabit and not the language itself.
