This is true for just about anything. Show up. Be curious. People will be glad to see you, ask your opinion, offer you opportunities. Everything good in my life happened because I just showed up.
I really can't emphasize enough that if you care about local politics, all you gotta do is show up. Just a regular schmegular person showing up. Literally just show up consistently in person and within a remarkably short amount of time, you will have a shocking amount of influence.

The bigger issue here is not policy right now, the current admin is to sclerotic to have one, means this stuff all online handlers engage in, or the lunacies interns get in documents Trump never reads, but that one of the 2 parties in the US is gonna be run by /pol/acks in the next decade
