As Tees Valley mayor Lord Houchen's defence of his deal with local businessmen crumbles, here's the Eye's recent special report on how Britain's flagship regeneration scheme secretly turned into one of the biggest giveaways of public money on record.

Special Report: Stripped Tees
IT WAS to be the UK’s largest regeneration scheme in decades, a model for regional devolution and the flagship post-Brexit freeport. But the redevelopment of the former steelworks on the south bank of...

Labour has shifted further and further to the right since gaining power, enacting some of the most hostile policies against minorities in decades, and the outcome? They are polling lower than the Mariana Trench. They aren't losing support to Reform. They are losing it to progressive parties.

A deeply confused long-read article about the Labour Party and the EU. Which possibly reflects well ongoing UK political confusion about the subject, not to mention insularity of not wanting to think too much about Brussels.

While Reeves, rightly, condemns Reform's racist policies Labour continues to rip families apart. Labour's anti-immigration policies boil down to saying if you aren't born here you don't count. Labour wraps up xenophobia in slightly nicer language, not always, but the policies are still xenophobic.

Since Brexit, a consignment of lamb can require export health certificates, veterinary approval, customs declarations and SPS checks.

Even as the world changes dramatically, UK discussion of Brexit goes round the same old loops. I wrote a piece on the @ukandeu.bsky.social site in *2016* about the 'sector-by-sector' approach Starmer's now raising. Some details no longer hold, but the basic points do: ukandeu.ac.uk/is-a-sector-...

Compliance without influence = Brexit

Ten years on from the 2016 Ref, UK is still forced to comply with more rules, more red tape, and no say-so much for taking back control!

Keir Starmer is talking about closer alignment with Europe, so here are three simple resolutions for 2026, keep the promises on EU relations, take real steps towards the Single Market and Customs Union, and listen to the public that wants closer ties.

Strange that he talks of a 'food and agriculture' deal (by which he presumably means SPS) as if it has already been agreed and now just has to be implemented when, as yet, no deal has been reached.

10 years after the referendum and the ONLY thing the minority who still support Brexit go on about, is winning that referendum (just).

Why?
Because it is the ONLY win Brexit has. The vote. Nothing since has been a win for Brexit.
