My grandparents were immigrants. Grandfather worked for the WPA...which my 7th grade social studies teacher called "a handout for work done".
Absolutely. I am the most privileged of immigrants, and I take this stuff *extremely* personally.
My granddad was a refugee, my wife, our close friends and those of our kids are either immigrants or the children of immigrants.

Do ministers ever think about the message their rhetoric on "handouts" and "golden tickets" for migrants sends about whether this is a government for people like us?

And....our final harvest. The new garden beds (with new soil) did NOT produce good-sized vegetables. We'll amend and try again next year.

Oh, this reminded me of a throwback for this Thursday. Unknown patterns I used back in the mid-70's. Star was pinned on for the 4th.

This week’s #SewAndTell is projects made from scraps. I had a scrap-busting frenzy this past spring. Made swimsuits (posted earlier), #SimplicityPatterns 3634 tank tops, and zippered bags (ala craftsy's beginning serger class)

#Butterick 6130 (back zip🫣) Jumpsuit - but I made it as pants and top - both with side zippers. I think the pants are my fav so far. Did (Palmer/Pletsch) tissue fitting - resulted in a good many alterations.

#SewAndTell Week 9 - Purple

How about a flashback to summer?
#McCalls 4040 Camp Shirt & #Butterick 3460 Long Skirt using #MoodFabrics Purple Mod Mushroom Slubbed Gauzy Cotton.

Tried a tulip sleeve on the top - don't love it. Think it's the wrong sleeve shape for it.

Wow! The Wawak sewing supplies catalog has a larger index than some of my cookbooks! 🩵💙💜

Remind me again why I never want to use polyester charmeuse as a muslin? Oh yeah… I remember… Pinning!

It took SEVEN wearable toiles before I was ready to cut into my mom's skirt fabric to make this McCalls 6504 short-sleeve shirt w/collar band, pocket, button placket, self-cuffed sleeve, and vertical front darts. It's now my fav.

Second Butterick 6838 nightgown - this time in a wonderfully soft winter-print knit. Used a coverstitch for sleeve hem, but went with a decorative stitch on the lower hem.

Butterick 6838 night gown in a fall print (gosh, hope it doesn't keep me up at night!). Pattern left to me by a dear friend who died last year, so I will think of her every time I wear it. Cutting out another as we speak.

Sewing Tip: Before sewing on buttons (by machine or hand), attach them with a dot of No-Sew fabric glue. Keeps them from moving around. Been sewing for 50 years & I just figured this out. Geeze.

I'm the opposite....I recall the excitement & being able to buy a bunch of new school supplies...and new books to read! Always read the first chapter before classes started.
Why do I still have back to school anxiety

If it's flannel it counts for #sewskyfallchallenge, right? McCalls 6024 wrap dress. Originally made with sleeve ruffle, but didn't like that at all. My smile is crooked due to dentist appt. ;-)

One of the best things about being in an international server is that if I mention that I live in Bear Country (CO), the Australians all howl about how we need to shut up about Aussie wildlife, because THEIR large carnivores mostly stay in the water, NOT INVITE THEMSELVES INTO THE KITCHEN. (🧵1/?)

Smoke from local wildfires mean I "need" to stay inside and sew. McCalls 6504 short-sleeve shirt drafted to a scoop neck and using Simplicity 8875's puff sleeve. Psuedo African wax fabric from one of my final trips to JoAnn's.

UG - Won't be using polyester charmeuse again (so many pins rqd) ...but still learning: Fabric that frays needs the french seam WST sewn w/ a serger - cuts off frays & tucks others away nicely. No strings hang out after sewing the RST seam.
