Sei Shōnagon (清少納言 ?966-1025?) in 'The Pillow Book' (枕草子) says "On January 6th, a person brought young grasses for January 7th, and people grew excited...."
It seems that a game was made of collecting the herbs on the 'first day of the rat of the New Year' (初子).

This wintery scene of Imado Bridge and Matsuchi Hill is by Japanese print designer Utagawa Hiroshige II.

Hiroshige II was one of the most successful students of the great print artist Hiroshige I. He continued the landscape style pioneered by his master, creating many series of landscape prints.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892), last great master of Ukiyo-e woodblock printing. This 1882 series depicts Japanese folklore: tengu messengers colliding mid-flight, Kintarō riding a carp, warrior Yorimasa awaiting the nue, and Fuwa Banzaemon in traditional costume.

Jan Lievens was a close friend of Rembrandt; they both grew up in Leiden, were taught by the same painter, probably shared a studio, and painted the rulers of their time. And yet, Jan Lievens is not as famous as his friend. It’s time to change that!

Bis Honoré #Daumier auf die Bühne trat, war die Kunst der #Karikatur hauptsächlich eine englische Domäne. Eine seiner Karikaturen brachten ihm sogar sechs Monate Gefängnis ein: er zeichnete den König als verfressenen #Gargantua

Ein sehr riesiger, dicker Mann, König Louis-Philippe, sitzt auf einem Sessel. Auf der rechten Seite liefern verhärmt und hungrig aussehende Bürger ihm seine Nahrung, die ihm über ein Fließband direkt in den Mund transportiert wird. Unter dem Sessel kommen die ausgeschiedenen Gesetze und Verordnungen, die von seinen Ministeriumsbeamten davon getragen werden. Parallelen zu heutigen Herrschern sind rein zufällig.

Die tropischen Träumereien Rousseaus lassen einen vermuten, dass dieser Maler weit gereist ist. Dabei ist er nie über Frankreichs Grenzen hinausgekommen. Seine Inspirationen holte er sich aus Büchern und aus Botanischen Gärten

Ich habe George Inness als Maler erst vor einigen Monaten entdeckt und bin ganz hingerissen. Seine Bilder haben eine traumartige Qualität, speziell die aus der Spätphase. Die Realität tritt einen Schritt zurück und löst sich in Licht und bunten Staub in Form von Landschaften auf.
Ein dunkler Wald am frühen Morgen. zwischen den Bäumen sieht man die Sonne aufgehen, die die Landschaft mit goldenem licht erfüllt. Es ist etwas diesig.

In #JapaneseFolklore futakuchi onna is a #yokai that looks like a normal woman, but who is actually hiding a second mouth under the hair on the back of her head. Endlessly hungry, she uses strands of hair as tentacles to gather food and stuff it into her ravenous extra mouth.

Mein Gehirn ist Matsch. Ich stecke bis zum Hals in meinen Steuern und Zahlen machen mir Kopfschmerzen. Entsetzlich. Ich hoffe, ich habe es Ende der Woche endlich fertig.
Bis dahin gibt es nur nette Bilder. Mehr geht einfach nicht.
