Jessie Mahaffey, who was scrubbing the deck of the U.S.S. Oklahoma when it was hit by Japanese torpedoes at Pearl Harbor in 1941, and who was among the last living service members who survived the surprise attack, died on March 1 at 102.
Jessie Mahaffey, Survivor of Pearl Harbor Attack, Dies at 102
He was cleaning the deck of the U.S.S. Oklahoma when it capsized under Japanese torpedo fire. Less than a year later, he survived the sinking of another Navy ship in the Pacific.

What he said about Social Security payments has been repeatedly debunked - so the question isn’t whether he’s lying about this, the question is why.

What is this a pretext for? He and the GOP have long shown interest in going after Social Security. What are they going to try?

"Jesus take the wheel" was not the political strategy I was looking for from the Democratic leader in the House.

In practicing zazen, we might not realize it but we have turned away from the life as lived by most people, because we feel a kind of existential unease as we discover that what we thought would make us happy actually doesn’t do that at all

On Monday I will celebrate MLK and his inspiration Gandhi, who, according to MLK, “furnished the method” of the Civil Rights Movement. With storms on the horizon, I will remember their message that non-violent resistance is effective (scholars have proven this to be true!), moral, and necessary.

What has helped me is reorienting my focus to local—news, shopping, events—a few years ago.

Keeps relationships close and meaningful.

Less instinct for (and invitation to) constant combat.

More room for curiosity.

Fundamentally, this approach has made me both happier and more effective.
