Communication Professor on the AAUP executive board at UCONN. I study CMC, Virtual Reality and HCI. Also mom to 2 kids and a crazy rescue dog. I enjoy travel, beaches, and all sorts of hijinks
This doesn’t help them learn! I give students my notes and tell them to rewrite them in their own words. Thinking about it in their own words and connecting it to existing knowledge is how they learn

The trifling is supposed to be pleasant??
"When the first of August came round, the Professor realized he had pleasantly trifled away nearly two months at a task which should have taken little more than a week."

Seems like a useful resource!
Since it's Tenure-And-Promotion-To-Associate letter writing season, a few years ago I compiled a set of materials that I found useful in crafting my letters. They might be useful to you too, perhaps.

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

If you work at a public university, your emails are likely FOIA-able.

If you mix your personal & work email accounts, it may make your personal email FOIA-able.
tl;dr — this EO co-opts the language of open science to implement a system of political control wherein presidential appointees are given broad latitude to designate any number of reasonable scientific activities and inferences as scientific misconduct, and to penalize those involved accordingly.

Yes. This is how our university now handles travel

I am searching for an email from a month ago. This will take about 5 hours and I will probably forget why I needed it before I find it. Living the dream!

Yes! Inverse correlation does not mean what he thinks it means
FFS, a "direct correlation" and an "inverse correlation" are OPPOSITES. There is no such thing as a "direct inverse correlation." That's like saying something is a positive negative number.

This man is an ignoramus.

In short, were the university to choose to defend itself, some simple arithmetic suggests that — at least financially — it could. Easily.

It’s not too bold to predict that every university president will face a similar choice in the coming months.

I urge faculty members to join the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). We have few organizations that represent us and offer us collective power. #Yale has a new chapter. You can start one if your campus doesn't have one yet. And you can join now too.

“If you believe in the eighteenth-century view of the mind, you will look and act wimpy,” @george-lakoff.com wrote in 2008. Is there a better way to describe how Democrats have mostly responded thus far to Musk's assault on democracy?
The power to stop Musk will come from the people. That's why Democrats must frame this coup to the public in a way that demands our attention and action. And they also have to do something they hate. They have to repeat the message until it sticks to brains.
