Two members of Elon Musk's DOGE team working at the Social Security Administration were secretly in touch with an advocacy group seeking to "overturn election results in certain states," and one signed an agreement that may have involved using Social Security data to match state voter rolls.

Some DOGE personnel had more access to data than previously acknowledged, according to a court filing.

1/ So, should the EU retaliate against Trump's Greenland tariff threats? There are roughly three schools of thought, each progressively more interesting than the last. A brief tour through the logic of escalation and deterrence: 🧵

For many European governments, Donald Trump’s threat of punitive tariffs against anyone who tries to stop him taking Greenland was the final straw in their failing relationship with the U.S.

Divorce, they believe, is now inevitable.
Trump’s Greenland threats push Europe toward divorcing America
With NATO thrown into question, some officials see the “coalition of the willing” as the basis for a new alliance without the U.S.

The way to end all this is for the EU to immediately get hyper-aggressive with sanctioning and tariffing every American they can find.

The man has worse approvals than at any point in his prior term plus it’s an election year. It’s all a bluff. Call it!

Before someone replies and points to all of the exceptions and unscrupulous things the US has done, I agree. It was never just idealism and soft power. But that is what differentiated it from prior Empires that depended on coercion. It is what the Trump admin does not understand now.

My hot take on Trump's tariffs against European countries:
1: they constitute economic aggression in order to acquire territory. Europeans will remember this for decades to come. They mean very serious damage to the transatlantic bond on all time horizons.

To cite some examples:

- Tighten screws on US digital giants (taxes, fines, even bans)
- Export taxes disrupting US supply chains eg pharma
- Exclude US firms from European procurement, inc defence

Just to put a fine point on how terrible Russia’s oil and gas revenues were in December, convert it to dollars. It’s almost off-the-chart bad at just $6 billion.

Year-end and quarterly taxes were due in December, as well, making it even worse. A complete collapse of revenues.
