I get an automated email in my inbox every single morning describing what changed overnight in a harmonized dataset from 50+ open data portals.

Data science is messy, and hard, and the reality is not that glamorous.

⬇️ Check out our reflections on a year of maintaining the Live Crime Tracker!
Crime data has huge potential but most cities fall short. Of 200 largest U.S. cities, just 64 share usable incident data. Accessible formats, standardized reporting, documented corrections and strategic partnerships would help transform public safety insights.

What We Learned from a Year of Tracking Crime Data
Open crime data has potential, but poor accessibility, inconsistency across sources, and changes over time limit its usefulness for analysis and policymaking.

Monash University has made many positions available specifically for young and early career researchers who would like to take some time away from the USA. These are case by case, not advertised. So if you are interested or know anyone interested have them get in contact with someone at Monash.

Unfortunately, all Census TIGER/Line and cartographic boundary shapefiles are down as of this evening.

This means that the tigris #rstats and pygris #Python packages will not work, and geometry support in tidycensus will also fail.

The Census API, for now, is still up.

Last year I started an annual "R Trivia Night" at our org's R Users Group as a fun way to close out the year. In prepping for this year's, I'm reviewing my (diabolical) questions from the inaugural event. Enjoy.
