to be like any other normal European country, a fiscally autonomous Scotland would have to significantly increase taxes and/or severely cut public spending - this is the simple truth that much of the SNP’s rhetoric around GERS seems designed to obscure

Maybe Keir should demand the heads of major US news networks any time they imply Britain is on the brink of civil war or that we live under sharia law. Or does it not work both ways?

I am not a lawyer, just a historian, but one fundamental problem with the political debate about the EU, especially in English publications is that the whole principle of the acquis communnitaire is not understood or taken seriously. The EU is a framework of rules, not an alliance.

The police continue to investigate the motive for last night's stabbings. Their initial statement is they don't have grounds to believe it was a terrorist motivated attack

Elected Reform Durham county councillor Darren Grimes posted this political attack on the assumption it was an Islamist attack

some journalists’ thirst for grievance is insatiable, this is egregiously bad reporting:

the UK obviously can’t benefit from electricity which *isn’t generated* and Scotland doesn’t “bear the brunt” of these constraint PAYMENTS, it *benefits* from them (ffs)

when I say “Scotland” here i risk falling into the Nationalists’ trap - i should really say “the private companies who rely on the GB energy market’s subsidy regime to support their investment in wind farms in Scotland”

more focus group frustration: just listened to group all agreeing that in the English press “Andy Murray was always Scottish if he lost and British if he was winning”

another myth that persists despite having been thoroughly debunked 🫤

A few outlets covered Musk making more explicit his calls for his ally Tommy Robinson to lead a movement that now prepares for violence and pre-empts (begins) a civil war with violence, claiming it is community self-defence. Most did not think there was any news here

been watching lots of focus groups - clearly many young Scots believe we “send all our taxes to Westminster but get only a fraction back”

but Scottish Government’s own National Statistics show we consistently benefit from 9.1% of UK public spending while contributing less than 8.5% to UK revenues 🤷🏻‍♂️
