“Short bursts indicate an ICE sighting. Long whistles indicate agents making arrests. If you hear the whistle and you’re undocumented, said [Whitney Hu, a community activist and organizer with South Brooklyn Mutual Aid], ‘you hide. And if you’re somebody who’s not, you go to the street.’”
As ICE Street Raids Ramp Up, New Yorkers Stock Up On Whistles
Taking a cue from Chicago, community groups have distributed thousands of whistles in recent weeks — a grassroots system people in other cities have adopted to help neighbors sound the alarm.

those of us laid off from Teen Vogue were really fortunate to complete our fundraising goal — the laid-off staffers at VIBE deserve the same support, as Black media outlets and journalists continue to be targeted and discriminated against in “austerity” measures
It was announced on October 16, 2025 that VIBE was "joining forces" with Rolling Stone. As a result, the majority of VIBE employees were laid off. If you have the means to give, this team could use the support! www.gofundme.com/f/support-vi...

I think I would enjoy a film called “Knives Out” a lot more if it was the title of a documentary about Joyce Carol Oates’s brilliant social media takedowns of our most hideous villains.

In early September, I went out to L.A. to interview the hilarious, genuinely wonderful Leslie Jones. Before we knew it, hours had flown by & we were talking like we’d known each other for years. The result is now live in the @nytimes.com Styles section (and will appear in Sunday's print edition).

Every coherent (using the term loosely here) word out of his mouth is an admission.
Trump: "Obama got a prize for doing nothing. Obama got a prize, he didn't even know what he got it -- he got elected and they gave it to Obama for doing absolutely nothing but destroying our country. He was not a good president."

Feels worth noting that this phase-out is for kindergarten through 2nd/3rd grade, where there’s a separate gifted track that doesn’t rely on pre-k teachers nominating students
My wife is an elementary gifted ed specialist. The idea that gifted kids either don't exist or don't benefit from gifted education services is both wrong and harmful to those kids. Phasing out gifted programs is stupid. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/n...
