Thinking about the politics of education systems & higher education

What about “education polarization” though, often presented as the root cause of everything that is happening in U.S. politics – the closest thing we have to a widely accepted master narrative?

Its impact is dramatically overstated; its implications are generally misinterpreted.

Marco Rubio says that Americans living in Europe shouldn't ever have to face any ramifications for their political speech online.

The chutzpah is jaw-dropping, as he is PERSONALLY trying to deport legal immigrants for their political speech in the United States.

We’re witnessing innovation and an expansion of state violence in response to student protests but it’d be a mistake to believe this is a knee jerk reaction to protest rather than a long standing goal.

DHS just detained a Columbia student who helped lead campus protests—a direct attack on campus activism. This timeline shows why authoritarians fear student protests: they're often the first and most effective catalysts for pro-democracy movements.

This new Trump Dept of Ed letter is so vaguely and tendentiously written that it can be plausibly interpreted as banning Black Student Unions.

And colleges are supposed to comply with it within fourteen days. Of yesterday.

Interesting time for universities like mine to proudly declare their political neutrality.

As the saying goes, you can pretend not to care about politics, but politics certainly cares about you.

Now more than ever, universities need backbone—and leaders willing to stand up for them.

WIC. They are pausing WIC.

That's the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. Last time I checked (a while ago), every dollar spent on WIC produced over a dollar in savings *in the same fiscal year.* For most people, though, feeding infants and mothers is enough.
Broader agreement that it to applies to discretionary spending payments (Head Start, WIC, etc).

Silver-bullet, top-down Bold New Ideas are never going to work. Effective approaches are slow, make significant investments and ask teachers what they need.

We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive
