Things have been crazy as I finish up work at ASU, so I’ve been looking forward to this block of time I set aside to read my first #LettersToAPreScientist pen pal letter of the year! It’s always a thrill to see stickers that align with your interests (food) and to get some surprises 😍

Now soliciting names for my new lab @unm.edu...do I go with a cool acronym or something simple but descriptive like "UNM High Pressure Lab" 🧐

Everyone back home in the Midwest is just livid about this, I'm guessing (but in a polite, restrained, kind of way)
Shrinkflation strikes AGAIN: boxes of Betty Crocker cake mix are two ounces smaller (from 15.25 ounces to 13.25 ounces).

That cookie or cake recipe you inherited from Grandma probably called for a 18.25 ounce box of cake mix.

How does lava sound when it comes to the surface of the Earth? Listen to a lava flow oozing out of its effusive vent high on the southwestern side of #Etna, 28 August 2025. That day no visits by tourists were allowed on the site, which permitted this (relatively) clean recording

The deadline is this Friday!
Next Friday 8/15 is the deadline to endorse #HabitableWorldsObservatory science cases. If you think it is important to consider whether a planet has the right geology in place to host life as we know it _before_ looking for life there, please endorse our case: bit.ly/GeochemHab_endorse #HWO25

Now we have Kara Brugman talking about goechemical habitability. Volcanoes are a crust factory for planets and also a mechanism for transporting volatiles from the interior to the surface and therefore atmosphere. Geochemical context is therefore critical for interpreting biosignatures. #HWO25

Today, come to my talk at 4:50 in the theater to hear about another factor to consider in finding eta-Earth #HWO25
Join me on Thursday in the Exo/Astrobio session to hear about how your friendly neighborhood geochemist/petrologist can do experiments to help maximize the chance of observing an #exoplanet that is actually capable of hosting life as we know it over a long period of time #HWO2025

For another parameter to add to the calculation of eta-Earth 😬 come see my SCDD talk on Geochemical Habitabilty Thursday afternoon in the theater 👀 #HWO25
Fernandes: Astro2020 decadal assumed eta Earth= 25% - assuming HWO will survey 100 stars, find 25 Earthlike planets, follow those up. But - we have no true Earth analogs yet around sunlike stars. All estimates of eta Earth are extrapolations from measurements of planets that aren't Earthlike. #HWO25

Bacteria from a Yellowstone hot spring do something no other organism has been found to do: breathe oxygen and sulfur at the same time. 🧪 It's both aerobic and anaerobic, a beautiful freaky creature from a beautiful freaky place

In a hot spring at Yellowstone National Park, a microbe does something that life shouldn’t be able to do: It breathes oxygen and sulfur at the same time.
