My favorite time of the week is when my wife and I are on the couch and the light is dimmed and we’re watching #gbbo and we both simultaneously go “oh nooooooo” very quietly under our breath.

After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like.
Let’s be clear about what happened to Jimmy Kimmel
Trump’s most brazen attack on free speech yet.

While we’re suing AI companies, can authors also, as a class, start suing the organized groups behind book banning? We have literal receipts proving the tremendous personal, professional, and financial damage incurred because of their malevolent libel and slander.

Technology giant Apple was accused by authors in a lawsuit on Friday of illegally using their copyrighted books to help train its artificial intelligence systems, part of an expanding legal fight over protections for intellectual property in the AI era.

Last night’s dream: Me, on a spacewalk, “Guys, shouldn’t we be wearing spacesuits? Or at least helmets?”

Also me: *accidentally breaks space telescope in half, watches it float off into oblivion* “It’ll still work tho, right guys?”

Exciting addition to my (robust) collection of anxiety dreams!

I’ve worked REALLY hard FOR YEARS to write books that are being SHAT UPON by state legislatures and school boards… banned for no reason… yet AI companies have stolen MANY of them to train their monsters so that ASSHOLES like this can grift??? I just. I cannot. What even is anything anymore. ☹️

Sounds like a decent settlement for when we win our class action lawsuit(s).
Open AI’s valuation is at $400 billion. They used about 190,000 books to train their plagiarism bot. Randomly saying 25% of their value comes from that stolen dataset, I think they owe the authors about $526,000 per stolen book.

Last night my daughter’s girlfriend’s mother died. It was sudden and horrific. We are grappling without a rope or any footing at all. Her name was Trish. Can you please say her name? Even though you don’t know her, hold her stardust in your heart for a second?

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.
