I wrote a new piece for TIME’s Made by History on one of my favorite films: #Clue! 🕵🏻‍♂️

I show how the film, set in 1950s during peak #McCarthyism, tells us more about the time it was created: the 1980s & new conservative movement.

ICE has now carried out two summary executions of innocent people in the streets of an American city.

If you work for ICE, there's no denying that's the mission you're supporting now. You don't get to claim in one year or ten or twenty that you didn't know what ICE was doing. You're complicit.

Welcome new BlueSkyers!

Just a tip before you start following a ton of people. To get rid of bad actors, stay safe, & keep this place from becoming like X, many people here will block new followers with no bios & no posts. Tell us something about yourself before following a ton of people. Thanks!
No, it's because Bluesky refuses to deal with spam and bot accounts so when I'm followed by accounts that *resemble* those ( following thousands of others and bios with lots of hashtags or 🚫) I tend to block. It's an imperfect system but it's all I have. And nobody owes anyone anything on here.

Ummm did this really happen?! Still reading over & over message I received from the DIRECTOR of my favorite film, Clue, thanking me for writing the piece for Made By History in TIME.

He said I really “got the point” of the film, including its “political subtext.” UNREAL, right?!

Trump at press conference on #Venezuela: “it dated to the Monroe Doctrines. The Monroe Doctrine is a big deal…we sort of forgot about it. It’s very important but we forgot about it.”

I mean, he clearly doesn’t know what any of this means. This explanation wouldn’t pass a 6th grade history test.

This piece is excellent for using Clue (1985) to think about the contemporary moment in which it as made. Highly recommend!

Also will recommend my own (very informal) review of Clue for what it has to say about the contextual moment in which it is set, 1954 with all its HUAC goodness.

This is a well-assembled statement about a movie that's grown into the cultural bedrock whilst never losing its sense of immediate relevance. Thank you for writing it.

And here's hoping that at some point in the future, we will all finally learn what one plus one plus two plus one equals.
