Study shows that senescent cells literally sugar-coat themselves to avoid recognition and clearance by the immune system.

A ganglioside-based immune checkpoint enables senescent cells to evade immunosurveillance during aging - Nature Aging
This study identifies a novel immune checkpoint in senescent cells that is linked to the ganglioside GD3 and that contributes to the evasion of immune clearance by these cells and to aging and age-rel...

This paper, coupled with the Perspective from Neuron, really indicates that our understanding of the immune system on an aging brain could well be entering a new phase - one with lots of great data rather than mainly conjecture.

1/7 Excited to share our team’s first paper revealing how senescent cells use the GD3 ganglioside as a Senescence Immune Checkpoints (SICs) to bypass immune surveillance published in @NatureAging! rdcu.be/d4XXJ
